From what I've seen, the best thing that such courses will do as far as lowering insurance goes is to make you a safer rider.

Generally, it seems that the places that offer you a discount aren't usually the cheapest places - though I think ebike may accept some, but I don't know if they actually make much of a difference if other factors are having a big effect on your insurance anyway.

Just doing a Bikesafe course allowed EBike insurance to send me a £40 refund, almost the same as the cost of the course itself.

Well worth it even if it doesnt get you a refund.

That's true but if you're doing it mainly for discounted insurance then it may not be worth it.
For my IAM I was quoted £110 per lesson, and the average number of lessons at the time was 5. Surprised

????
IAM observers only charge petrol money; in some groups a fiver, in others £15 per ride plus annual membership of about £20. It should take no more than 5-6 rides to get you to a pass standard.

A BikeSafe-London Rider Skills Day at The Ace Cafe near Wembley in London is great value at just £30 for a full day that includes interesting presentations and videos, a short town observed ride in the morning and a long country rideout to Buckinghamshire in the afternoon. There is as much tea, coffee and soft drinks as you can manage, a full lunch, plus trackday vouchers, a pack containing a freebie dvd, earplugs, pens, etc and a certificate of attendance. Thumbs Up What's more BikeSafe-London is recognised now by pretty much all the insurance companies who offer anything from 7.5% to 10% discount off insurance for anyone attending a BikeSafe-London day. If you pay £400 or more for insurance the day is paid for with a 7.5% discount (£300 with 10%) plus you get hints and tips to keep you safe on the road! Very Happy More information on https://www.bikesafe-london.co.uk

The RoSPA training is also recommended. That is if you can find a local group and instructor that is. Info on the test is here, info on groups is here (click on Advance driving, motorcycle link for pdf list). This will probably be more expensive than the IAM, however there is the argument that you get what you pay for.

The RoSPA gold award is the nearest a civilian can get to police standard. The RoSPA bronze is about the same as a IAM pass.

With the RoSPA test you have to retake it every 3 years to keep it valid. Some insurers do offer a discount for RoSPA or IAM pass. Whether the discount is enough to offset the cost of the training is debatable (counter argument is can you put a price on experience?).

HTH Thumbs Up
