I have a BA Hons in Psychology and a M.Sc in Applied Psychology.

I lecture Psychology, so does Kara. . so not everyone who studies psychology ends up doing office jobs!

I would say to you that if you enjoy Psychology at A level, it only gets better at degree level! You study some stuff you will love and some you will tolerate, but overall it will be worth it.

It lets you get into many many different careers, including research . . . . .which is way cool.

Go for it!!!!!

And as for taking time out, do it after uni. Get your degree, get a shit job for 6 months, save everything you earn and then go travelling before getting a 'proper' job. When I went travelling there were some kids just out of school there and they were no way getting as much out of it was we were - enjoy the freedom at uni then learn how to use freedom by travelling after.

You won't regret it. Thumbs Up

That's great advice feef, I am still unsure of what to do, I am on coursefinder at the moment filling out a test and it says I am into engineering the most! Surprised What does engineering involve?

Cool!

I would probably tour Europe on my bike like Nath did Laughing

What sort of research are we talking here, like how to sell products by using certain subliminal tactics etc.?

That sounds ok to me. I could manipulate people into killing each other with my new design for the Frosties advert. Although that has the same effect anyway now. Laughing

The results are in, from this UKCourseFinder thing, we were told to go on it by my college as it tells you to answer lots of questions then assesses what are you might be best going into. I have done the test and came up with these, quite surprising results:

Ancient & medieval history
Mechanical engineering
Philosophy
Engineering & technology
Archaeology
Civil engineering
Economic & social history
Electronic & electrical engineering
Society development studies
Manufacturing engineering
Aeronautical engineering
Mining engineering

These are in order from top to bottom.

History was the longest bar, the two below were equal and the rest went down in steady increments.

Then it gives me choices of where does the certain course, Durham does Ancient History and then others could be done in Sheffield which I suppose is better because I want to stay in Yorkshire.

What does Engineering involve? I will be looking on Google and stuff for basic outlines, it would be nice for some experienced input though Thumbs Up Cheers. Smile

out of that list, and talking about the Engineering subjects (since that's what I studied) if you were to take Mechanical Engineering, you would, in effect, probably cover all the other disciplines anyway, and get the choice to specialise in your final year.. so with the exception of electrical and electronic, you can drop the ret out the list, and just put Mech Eng in there..

engineering is, I suppose, like a practical form of allied physics. Understanding the theory of Why things move and act as they do, whether it's NOT moving (holding up a building) or moving lots (engines) it looks at how fluids flow, and change with presure and temperature (which also covers Aerodynamics)

You'll also probably be doing some product design (why are things the shape and size they are for a job?)
materials science (why are some metals stronger/lighter than other... how does forging/casting etc affect strength and other properties)
Production technology (what's involvred in actually MAking something once it's been designed)
Electrical engineering will be dealt with but not as much as in proper electrical engineering course, and will focus on control systems, motors, power consumption etc..

In some unis they also do hands on technical work, involving stripping and rebuilding basic engines, welding etc..

if you want any more info about mech eng.. drop me a PM and I'll try and answer your Qs

Cool feef, cheers for all that.

I have been looking in detail into a course at Sheffield University, and I think Mechanical Engineering might be the thing for me. Which I suppose is a radical move away from Psychology. Confused

With Mechanical Engineering, would I be able to have a step up into maybe working for a motorcycle company or something, maybe on the design team for Kawasaki (They need alot of help) OR something similar? In time I'm talking, not straight away.

I was looking at this link for Automotive Engineering, I wasn't interested at first because I had the preconception that it was for people with lower abilities, now I look at it I don't think this anymore. I found this link:

Automotive Engineering

For Automotive Engineering, and it looks quite good to me, especially learning about engines and building a car. I think a Hayabusa lump will be on campus if I get to design one Laughing

I have now looked at Mechanical Engineering and it also looks pretty good, with a mention of managerial positions, sounds promising. Also Forensic Engineering looks good too

Forensic Engineering

Mechanical Engineering

Having read through quite a few of these, I am fairly certain Engineering is what I want to do at University. Cheers guys for opening this door for me. Thumbs Up Very Happy

engineering

if you are lucky

you get to build and potentially design stuff , which gets excitng esp if you go somewhere Saudi , and the kings wayy to rich son says build me a tower of babel , but bigger , heres 2bn to start with. You more or less become pharoh in such a situation, though fucking it up ends you up in chop square.

If you are unlucky

It involves sitting in front of a computer constantly trying to redesign a certain part which is used bazillions of times , like a nut or a screw to save 0.00003% materials/weight/build time , which is nowt but x a bazillion = lots of money savings = v boring , and every new design you make belongs to the corp you work for period.

EDIT , take a guess which ones are more numerous Neutral

EDIT 2 , I'd be careful with automotive engineering , the pinnacle technology for 150 years , the petrol internal combustion engine is going the way of the dodo , that said I reckon diesel will be with us much longer.

if you don't fancy it, when you graduate, ANY degree that offers relatively numerate graduates into the workplace will be worthwhile. My cousin graduated with a Mech Eng degree, and his firts job was business analyst and project manager with Andersen Consulting. as with Any degree, there's good and bad within it's related profession, but it's not as black and white.

if it was me (and it was 10 years ago) I'd chose bog standard mech eng, and wait till your final year when you actually specialise then.
for example, you might start off thinking you want to design engines, but actually get really into mettallurgy and materials research for pistons or con-rods.. your chosen career path might be automotive related, but it doesn't require an automotive degree.

play it safe and go for the general mech eng option, wait till you know what you like within the course, then chose to specialise.

Do what you enjoy. If you want to do engineering do that, if you want to do something academic do that.

With research we are talking about people, unis etc paying you to do much much larger scale (but essentially the same as A2 psychology) research projects into different stuff. It depends if you wanna have your heads in books and be in labs or if you want to have your hands mucky.

As far as I am aware engineering can bring travel opportunities, but you are working so don't get to see much of places you go to. Also the travel element may mar any kind of long term relationship you may form (if you get me), as you may often be working away.

Psychology rules!

Philosophy - I know 2 people with philo degrees, one is a teacher and one works for the council environment dept. Bit of a dead end subject for degree really

Look at the for careers in psychology. . . . https://www.bps.org.uk/careers/

Very Happy

In that case, I hope I get lucky, I have an appointment scheduled tomorrow with the head of 6th form at my college so I am going to talk it over with her and see what she says too. I do want to be in a good career though and if this is at least half useful degree to do I am up for it, like I say it would be good to say I've been and this way it's not bad degree to have.

Yeah I think I will do the Mechanical Engineering one, as you say it covers them all and basically gives me more options. Cheers for the advice, may send you a PM later about the course and what it entails, that is if you have any free time Smile

Yeah I suppose so, I don't really mind but I do like to get my hands dirty because it keeps me entertained and focused on the job at hand, though Psychology is one of the few lessons I have that I listen in Laughing We are currently doing research and designing an experiment so we'll see how that goes.

I can't say that I have much of any relationship at the moment to mar so that is ok, though I might have then Neutral And I don't mind about not seeing the places, I can always visit them again if I like them Very Happy It's just leaving time for biking! I have withdrawal symptoms if I don't ride every so often Sad

Cheers for all the advice and experience it really is helping me an enormous amount. Thumbs Up Smile

Laughing Laughing

From psychology to Mechanial engineering, quite a change there Phanny. I would hazard a guess that you don't have a f*cking clue what you want to do. I 'thought' mechanical engineering might be interesting and went and done it...was I wrong? Damn straight I was. Fuck all practical work, all boring, tedious lectures about stuff you'll mostly never use, total pain in the arse course.

As you've said - Get to your coucnillor and just say "I don't have a f*cking clue"...she will no doubt be able to ask you some questions to narrow your choices down.

To be honest this is the best way to find otu what a course is REALLY like, ask someone whos done it.

I to be honest just picked the subject i was still enjoying by A2 and went with that (biology), except i LOATHE dealing with plants, hence zoology.

Which is cool cos we go into far more depth about individual species too.

You forget it all within a week naturally, but its nice to go 'and theres erm, this thing, erm... snails and octopuses are related!!!'

Its exciting Thumbs Up

You are right Greg, I have no idea hence asking you lot. I don't have a clue what courses are available because they all stem off into specialist areas and I didn't really want to ask at school because the teachers all bore me and I won't get away so I thought I would ask you lot to see if it was any good, as bonny said Thumbs Up

Now you've put me off Mech Eng. I'm going to have to talk to the councillor, I'll report back tomorrow for those who care Very Happy

don't want to throw another spanner in the works, but often (but not always) the school concellor doesn't know their arse from their elbow about real world careers. she reccomended I go work in a shop, and my sister become a secretary. my sister graduated with a business and marketing degree and has worked for linn Hi-fi, renault and now does volvo's UK merchandising. I'm a contract DBA for an internet payment gateway.

to be completely honest, sometimes you don't know what you WANT to do until it's almost too late.

I went to uni to do mech eng, as I'd always been interested in engines, cars, bikes, planes. boats..

I got tired of tjhe theory and actually found out I would rather keep my mechanical stuff as a hobby, and interest.. and as a career I chose IT.

Whatever you do chose, just do your best to stick at it

Hello,

I have a BSc Psychology degree and quite a lot of experience: aiming to become a clinical psychologist. If you still have any questions that haven't been answered about what is required, how long it takes and what the competition is like etc. drop me a PM: I've been running this gauntlet for a while now so I'll hopefully be able to help out, or point you in the right direction if not.

Hi byke, I may drop you a PM later, I am doing some serious research into this now and I'm glad I caught it because for Engineering I think I need Mathematics, which I intended to drop Confused It also demands quite high A level grades too, if I got three As at A2 level, THREE!!!, I would get a grant of £1500. Gives me some incentive to work I suppose. Very Happy I need at least a B in Maths at A2, I'm so screwed.

I have done the Stamford test which also is like the coursefinder but alot more specialist, it told me that I will be more suited to History Based or General Engineering degrees and courses. I have had a look through, and I like what I see.

That's all very true feef, I have booked in an appointment, going to take what I can from it (Tables, chairs, pens etc. Wink) and see where it goes. Now I've seen that you need very high grades in very technical and challenging subjects I'm abit worried that I won't make the cut, so I'll found out if I can blag my way in on my other A levels Smile

Cheers guys. Thumbs Up Very Happy

fuck school careers advisors , they don't know jack , they are told by the government to tell you to go to university and do any shite degree to hide unemployment .

you do still have a few months before university , go round some places if they are good enough they'll let you watch.

That's a good idea. It's just the high entry requirements needed to get onto an Engineering that's:

a) Totally blown my preconception out of the water

and

b) Scared me because I'm now unsure of what to drop, a lesson I may scrape an E in but is needed, or a lesson I may get a C in that's irrelevant? This is what I'd be asking my advisor Neutral

I'll get some prospectuses in and go round some Universities. Cheers.

I wish I'd paid more attention on open days instead of looking at fit girl's arses Sad

If it means that much to you and you fuck up , you can always redo A levels , though quite a few places if you don't have something like maths will make you do a module in maths in addition to your usual stuff , just to make sure you can hack the maths.

That said there are plenty of lower universities to go to , and not all of them are bad, just look at Bolton been a uni for a year and is 2nd best uni in Manchester , I actually know Jim England there who teaches automotive something or other.
