I've been slowly working towards my DAS with my test booked for this Thursday. I have a troublesome back and went to see a specialist today who informs me I have a huge slipped disc Crying or Very sad and has said I should leave the bike riding alone for a while, ( I may even need surgery!)

Can't tell you how gutted I am, I was so enjoying my course and looking forward to the test then buying my first bike. He says we'll look at again in 3 MONTHS Mad .

Anyway just fancied a whinge Wink

Well surely another 45 mins on a bike isnt going to harm you, as you have come all this way, take your test, if you pass just dont ride and if you fail at least you got a reason no to ride. Thumbs Up

I have another two lessons to come before hand (6 hours worth and I reckon I need them! )

What your saying makes sense, but its doubtful I will pass if don't take further lessons.

What has you instructor said about your riding?

If he says go for it then i would.

Is it hurting you when you are on a bike?

Funnily enough, the time I'm on the bike is the only time I have no pain, must be the position. (Riding the usual Honda cb500s)

The problem is I've had an scan on my back this week and it really does need rest, the disc is in a bit of a mess.

I have to speak with the instructor in the morning, I will ask his advice then.

You can do the DAS again, you can't repair your back.

I'm assuming you won't be riding even if you do pass your DAS, in order to get your back sorted out. So take this as a momentary set back and whittle away the weeks and/or months dreaming about the lovely bike you'll get! Smile

I know how it feels to have abck problems, one half of my back is growing at a faster rate than the other side, meaning I have a crap posture, not that noticeable but the Doctor said I should carry on riding, I find the pain all goes away when I ride the bike, the only time it niggles is when I go over a bump quite sharply...

Hi P1LFC

After having 2 discs removed and a neck fusion I can tell you it will be a bloody long time trying to get yourself fit again. My advice to you is if your fit do the test obviously you'll need the instructor approval but give it a shot & good luck to what ever decision you take.

regards
Gary

My mate had a slipped disk for ages and didnt know it. Every time he was doing his job it felt better than when he was walking around town, driving the car, picking a pen from the floor etc. The doctor said he had to stop doing his job immediately, and he didnt want to do that.

Of course, when his employers found out he had to stop. The air force didnt want one of their fighter pilots to fuck up his back after they spent so much money on him, therefore he's got some time off.

Daft eh? When he was flying at insane speeds, pulling some serious G's he felt fine. Picking a pen up from the floor? Agony.

Welcome to the wonderfully weird world of back problems Wink

Well its done, cancelled my last two lessons and my test Thumbs Down . I decided it wasn't worth the risk (After all I'm only doing this for fun (mid life crises!), I don't need it for commuting etc).

Thanks for all your input and advice, I thought it through before cancelling (I really did need those 2, 3hr lessons before the test!)

Anyway roll on next year! I've locked away the money for a bike, so I wont spend it and just have to wait for the go ahead to resume. I'm being optimistic and hoping for February.

Thanks again ... appreciated! Smile

You've made the most cautious choice, and I dont think anyone will knock you for it!

Hope you dont get too much trouble from your back mate

Hurt my back a few years ago playing footie.

8 years pain free.

Slipped disc earlier this year when I lifted my 12 month old son out of the car.

Incidents may or may not be connected.

I'm an IT deskjockey so fortunately I can carry on working. Driving to work is a bit of a pain. I had no pain riding a bike!!! Rolling Eyes

Wow thats great.

I have a disc in my spine thats gone completely SPLAT, and then crystallised, surgery would be risky because of the ways its pressing on my nerves. It give me sciatica (sp) numbness in my feet, pins and needles, false pains bla bla, Ive been told not to ride a motorcycle (or swim, or play golf, most excercise is out of the question), but the fact is, all ive got to do is bend over wrong and it can get worse, so bugger it, im gonna have some fun along with all the pain im usually in.

Only worry i have is if i come off i could bugger my back, but as said, i could do that doing just about anything.

Im captain boring while on the road, i just like things with engines in, since my back got bad, ive had to drive an auto car, totally soul destroying when it was something that gave me so much pleasure.

Luckily like you, on the 4 or 5 hours ive had on a bike, found it fine, no pain, no pins and needles in my legs like when im driving, and i can even change gear without issues. (actually, i lie, lifting my leg over the bike is a BIATCH, think im going to perfect a running leaping motion from behind)

Got my DAS at the end of the month, cant wait Smile
