Hello.

Had my closest crash with a car yet this mourning.

Basicly theres a big house right on the side of the road , and then theres a bit of pavement where over protective mothers drop of there fat children so that they can walk 10 meters into the school.

Anyway im taking it easy as the kids normally try to cross over at this point, but I wasnt really alert as I normally would be.

To my horror a girl pulls out ( new driver as she was young, 17/18 years maybe? ) from this part into my lane, she was looking in the other direction.. Even though there is no way she could see the lane I was in, unless she has x-ray glasses.

So I slame the ancors on, and I was convinced I was going to hit the car. I locked the rear brake up, but I blame the fact that my Slow runnning jet has fallen out ( yea fallen out! ) and I so I had no revs to keep the engine running. Somehow I managed to stop the bike with onlyabout half a ft to spare from here front bonnet.

I looked at her, and she seemed pretty shaken up, she gave the "both hands in the air " jesture as to say sorry, so I just shock my head and got my bike started again and zoomed off.

I was pretty pleased myself as I didnt panic, yea my heart skipped a beat but I didnt drop the bike like many of my friends have done in the same situations.

It seems every day im getting closer and closer to crashing, and im sure im riding pretty safely. Im just waiting for it to happen and im hoping its not going to be a big one..

My question is, What should I do to get someone to make this road safer. Its going to be only a matter of time before either a child gets killed by a car, or a crash happens. Sadly not everyone uses there brain at this point like me and they often see speeds of 40mph at this point.

petition the council to put down some shelac grip stuff (the stuff they put on run ups to zebra crossings , hard on tyres but can stop faster on it).

ride slower and further out nearer the middle white lines?

get somebody to put up a mirror? (lots of those in Cornwall).

rev harshly (keep choke on?) while keeping the clutch slightly in so they hear you?.

but generally nothing will happen unless somebody gets hurt , Bolton Road Radcliffe had lots of cars knocking people over , but that wasn't due to speed or anything , it was generally due to stupid kiddies starring into their phones and stepping out into the road.

3 years after a double fatality (the walked out into the road without looking infront of a lorry) , there is a concealed speed camera there.

just a thought , it says in the highway code you can use your horn to make other road users aware of your presence...

Are there no speed bumps? I thought all roads near schools had speed bumps, it's speed bump city near me.

Apart from that, it might be wise to avoid the road in future, too many women putting their lippy on while pulling out is a recipe for a crash.

Riding out to the middle of the white line wouldnt of really helped in this incidenct to be honest, but It would of helped if this dumb girl actually understood the dangers of car driving and was looking correctly.

If I was the council, I would just put a pavement there, so no cars are surposed to park there ( there not alloud to anyway, jaggid yellow lines, but they still do ) but this is also an entry into a house.

My RS 125 is pretty loud so reving it there would be good, exsept all the kids are exspecting you to do a wheelie

And yes, im pretty sure this road is only going to change when someone gets killed, But ill give it a go and write to the council or somthing. Its a big school, 1300+ pupils so hopefully this will be in favour

I don't have any suggestions for your particular situation.

But as someone who is 'clocking up the miles' since passing the DAS, I am increasingly finding myself in dodgy situations.

Most recently, 30 zone. Bimbling along. Car driver to the left of the lane, every appearance of pulling over, but I hung back.

Suddenly the right indicator comes on and there is a car in my path.

Thank the lordy for stopping distances.

Much glaring was done.

Could have been worse.

Work have just made me do an advanced driving course.

All about maximum observations, looking far ahead, analysing all parked cars, keeping 4 second gap between car in front. Also frequently checking mirrors to aid peripheral vision.

One hint is to make yourself visible, ie in the car I was told to turn the lights on, on a bike do the same and wear a bib.

What about contacting the school and trying to get them involved.
Surely the well being of the kids would be a priority right behind collecting school fees.

depends on how far you want to go with it or how much responsibility you feel like taking on. Maybe even a P&T meeting would be a good forum to raise it in.
