Im off to Glyfada in Crete (Greece) to rescue sea turtles for 5 weeks.
May even stay longer, havent decided 100% yet.

Basically i pay £110 notes for legal cover and general signup to the organisation, then i just have to get to there campsite and keep myself fed and watered.

I quite luckily actually got a place at their actual rescue centre, as opposed to an outpost on some beach.

Looking at costing me about 500 ish notes by the time ive sorted everything out for this for 35 days in the sun handling big animals and doing something rewarding, that will actually look ace on my CV.

Not to mention the fact the only job down here to show me any interest has been hogshead, and its been a whole week since the interview. Spineless mugs.

https://www.archelon.gr/eng/wois.htm

Heres the organisation Thumbs Up

If any of you are lost souls over summer and biologically minded then you should apply. 500 notes is cheaper then a two week holiday.

Edit: Just looked up glyfada on wikipedia. here

Just trying to figure out how to get cheaper flights Mad

Thought it would be about 100-150 return.

So far its looking at £170 one way!

Arse.

Anyone know a good cheap way to get to athens? Im gonna have a fair bit of luggage too, so it helps if they are cheap on extra baggage?

Jekyll and Hyde my love Wink

Besides these are majestic wild animals, that are getting fucked over by human interference. And there numbers are seriously declining.

I empathise with their plight a lot more then cows Wink

Im buying a polaroid camera off ebay for cheap, but the film is so ruddy expensive.
So might bring a few disposables to go mad with.

To be honest im staying in a tent in the fringes of athens, i dont want to be leaving expensive stuff in there. So my cheap arse polaroid to take the picture i wont want to take to kodak, and several disposeables to get lots of overexposed pictures of turtles Laughing

For anyone who might be vaguely interested in looking for flights for me, im flying out on the 1st of july and come back 5th august.

Also, anyone know if visa cards usually work in european countries, as id like to keep some readies on my 'spare' visa debit card i dont overly use, and i dont want to either go to use it and not get accepted, or spend a fiver and get charged a fiver.

Same as with cashpoints...??

Sorry, never really been abroad on my own before (as in, never really had to worry about this kind of crap) so dont really know the 'rules'.
Like travellers cheques? Where, how and why are they secure?

Sorry if im being a pain, just excited and nervous at the same time.

Still trying to work out what the rules are for extra luggage, as ive got to bring a tent with me Neutral

I always felt so bad for the turtles that didnt make it to the sea! - I have a love for all things with shells...they are sort of favourites with the family really.

Very wise on the polaroid, not worth taking some expensive gear for the type of "expedition" you are planning, would be different if you could guarantee somewhere to lock them away but...

As for credit cards they should be fine, cash points too but always check with your bank first just in case they have any restrictions on it, last thing you want to do is get stuck with no cash.

Your Visa Debit card should work, but just check with your bank.

Cash points should also work.

Good luck with your time away.

Debit/Credit cards work, but most charge you a commission on every transaction you make, averages around 3-4%. If your a tight arse like me you could open a Nationwide account as they don't charge you anything apparently.

Do you have to go on those days?

If you go 3rd July - 8th August, you can go from Heathrow with BA for £232 return. 1st July to 5th August you're looking at £329 return.

Lufthansa will take you (via Frankfurt or Munich) for £212 return on your dates. Try https://www.flights.com/uk.html to search all the scheduled airlines. You'll possibly get it cheaper with one of the charter flights or one of the RyanEasyBuzzGoCrap airlines (but I won't touch them anymore unless they save me at least £200 per hours worth of flight).

Hi

Enjoy yourself.

With your cards they should work (same for your mobile), but tell them in advance so they don't decide to lock the card thinking it has been stolen.

For films, try https://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/default.php?cPath=777 for cheap bulk buys. £6.50 for a 10 pack of Fuji film which is getting close to its use by date.

All the best

Keith

Just watch for the locals trying to rip you off. If you don't come over as a tourist then you should be okay.

I'm surprised no one has said take the bike. Then again, I have experienced Athens traffic, not for the inexperienced. Big tall bikes are the order of the day, think Triumph Tiger, Honda Africa, etc. Allows you to see over the traffic and find the gaps. Lacking any fear of death or serious injury also helps.

Hope you have a memorable time. At least you'll have some stories to tell. Very Happy

Thumbs Up

Dads paying for me to get some sort of cash card.
You fill it with say 500 euros, and just use it from a cashpoint for 'free'.

Saves me taking a fiver hit everytime i use a cashpoint, so taking bigger lumps out and getting mugged off for it.

Im still trying to make certain which day they want me there, and get some simple logistic questions answered.

To be honest my main concern as i say is the 'simple' stuff. Can i rent tents cheaper over there then the cost of excess baggage, who do i meet and where, security on site, safe boxes.

Should be a good giggle, i just want to go knowing what i got myself into.

Just thought id clear up a couple of cock ups (on my part).

Seems im not staying in a campsite, rather im staying basically IN the rescue centre.

They have a couple of railway carriages they have converted to accomodation. Which is ace.
Still have to bring a sleeping bag and probs a pillow.

What also makes it great is it allays my fear of being in a campsite in the arse end of nowhere. So im actually staying in the Glyfada resort (15 minutes from athens), on a harbour, all summer.

My flights booked from luton on saturday at 2 ish, getting to the airport at 10.30 Rolling Eyes

Any suggestions for essentials i should take (i dont travel often, and i tend to overthink simple tasks and forget biggies), as so far i have;

Toothpaste, mouthwash, condoms, alarm clock, batteries for mp3 player, book on athens, lots of dodgy free shirts (beer ones mainly), both monthly and daily contacts, passport money etc, and sleeping bag.

Oh and my polaroid turned up today Mr. Green
Film should be here soon.

Oh thats a point, how the buggering hell am i supposed to change batteries on a polaroid? Its one of these and although it works fine, im worried that i wont know how to change them if/when it dies.
Also what does that slider UNDER the lens do?
Goes from an empty triangle to a full one.

Do anything to get away from Heather eh? , nah just joking , its different I have to admit, and if I was younger not nailed to a 9-5 job (Which isn't actually 9-5 I just have to be there 38 hours a week).

I'd take a deeper look.
