PostPosted: 18:37 - 21 Jun 2006    Post subject: Which 1000cc for £2000? Reply with quote

The facts:-

- Total about 3 years riding experience
- Had full licence for 1 year
- Will have 2 years no claims
- Started on a 125cc then went to a 600cc after i past my test.
- 24 years old
- Ride everyday (sun, rain or snow) approx 10000 miles per year
- Commute 26miles per day.

Bored of the XJ600, i feel i need some thing nice to look at and nice to ride.

Originally i was thinking Thundercat 600cc. But in a moment of madness i'm now thinking Thunderace 1000cc.

Any ideas or recommendations for the £2000 mark??

Cheers.

ZX9s worth a look, as well as blades (though not a fan of blades myself).

I strongly recommend you try a slightly modern day 600 before going straight to the 1000. XJ's are old 'skool' with what, less than 60bhp? Thundercat must have naother 20 on top of that.

Worth a go trying them just incase you do actually find the cat is 'enough' for you. That way it won't cost as much in oil *implies that old yamahas swallow oil at a horrendous rate* Laughing

XJ600s = 59bhp with a boring power delivery.

I drove around on a thundercat 600 for about an hour on a test ride, and i found that i wasn't very torquey lower down in the revs. I found if i kept the revs slightly higher, it was crazy rapid. Which is nice....

....however.....i think i'd like a nice bit of torque at low revs ...... as well as crazy rapid at the higher revs.

A 1000cc will obviously cost me a little bit more on fuel, insurance and maintenance on parts.....anything else i should considering?

I'm thinking 1000cc big bike, nice looking, POWERFUL and torquey.

Thunderace for me.
ZX9R or blade are good as well, but there's something about the 'ace that makes it just that bit more appealing, maybe cos they're less common?

XJR1300SP Wink

I've got a blade on loan at the moment while the XJR is in having a top end service and a new rear shoe fitted. For everyday use the XJR beats the blade hands down. It's a far more involving ride than the Blade which apart from the howling revvy power delivery, is, dare I say it, a bit dull. The Blade is almost too easy to ride quickly.

The XJR is also comfy for a tall get like me Laughing

Old school naked rocks Thumbs Up

First thing I would do is draw up a short list, find some ads that fit the bill and phone around for some insurance quotes, you might be surprised by how much they are.

Thunderace is a very confidence-inspiring bike to ride. Comfy, fast and handles well enough for the majority to enjoy well beyond their limits.

I did 2000 miles in france last year, 2-up without a hitch. Equally, I commuted into London from Cambridge on it a few times, when I was on training courses.

not too hard to work on either, and can be bought for not-a-lot as everyone wants the R1.

I picked up my S reg 'ace last year for £1500

try and make sure you get one with an original exhaust system, as losing the EXUP makes it harder work at low revs, as there's less useable power low down without the EXUP.

I agree. Modern 600cc sports bikes have all the speed, power, acceleration you will need, are good to look at and are not a heavy on the wallet as 1000cc bikes. Especially if you are planning on constant riding.

The new R6 is a corker! Thumbs Up

Not seen many for £2k though.

I'd be interested to see exactly how much more a Supersport 1000 costs to run on a day to day basis over a similar 600. I can't see that it's going to be that much more to be honest. Apart from tyre prices being slightly more, I can't see where the extra cost is supposed to come from.

Err...fuel costs. Look after the pennies. Thumbs Up

I was thinking more of a second hand R6. I've seen a few at my local dealers for about £2300, not the new ones. I think it was an '04, but, still look good!

I get better fuel consumption out of my Blade than my old R6, lower revving and more power. I average over 41mpg on my daily commute and lunchtime blasts.

How many blades go for £2000, that are not close to needing scrapped:?: Within the price range, a 600cc is better in all aspects when considering a daily usage over a long period.

In your opinion. He was asking about 1000s in the first place so your suggestion is irrelevant in that respect anyway. I didn't recommend a Blade, I merely asked a question of what seems to be widely accepted point of view.

Depends on what you want to use the bike for really, a Bandit 1200 would be the best of all worlds and they are cheap as chips. A mate of mine has just got one after 5 months on a Divvy 6 and he's as happy as a dog with two dicks.

If you want a sports 1000, 2K isn't really enough to get a cherished one. I'd go for a GSXR750 SRAD or the much forgotten but almost as quick as an old Blade YZF750 (I know where there is one of these that would go for 2k or even less).

Cheers

For day to day usage I would go for the thousand cc bike - for fun riding I would go for a 600cc (presuming I didn't care about my licence either way).

A newer 600 may well be a bit snappier than an older litre class bike, however the thousand will be easier to ride around town.

Insurance.....

.... XJ600s - £300

....Thundercat 600cc - about £600

....Thunderace 1000cc - about £700

24years old, 1 years NCD, ungaraged, no security - Obviously i'm going to try and get this down, by "securing" it!

I think the cost of insurance is whats mainly swaying me towards the 1000cc. (£100 extra for another 40bhp yes please)

I like the R6 and to be honest my original plan was ...

DT125 > XJ600s > Thundercat > R6 (or equivalent) > GSXR1000

now...

...xj600 > Thunderace > GSXR1000

I'm thinking.....why not go for it now?..why wait?? if the 1000cc drinks too much petrol or its too much, just downgrade to a 600cc! or updowngrade to a nice new light sports 600!

I take it these are TPFT? I wouldn't really bother with Comp on the money you are looking to spend (not being funny, it's not worth the extra).

As I was saying, if you get a decent bike with no mechanicals to worry about, I can't see it costing much more to run than a smaller capacity bike. As for security, personally I wouldn't bother with an insurance discounted alarm/immobilizer, buy something cheaper that works as well for peace of mind. Buy an insurance discounted lock that works well and a marking system like Datatag/Smart Water, you should still get an insurance discount and some cheaper but worthwhile security. IMHO of course.
