Today was my 28th birthday, and it wont be forgotten in a while Mad .

I've been out of biking for a month or 2 after this , so after spying a bike on ebay, I thought as a Birthday treat, I'd go out and get it today. I even went out and got a new lid yesterday so I could at least test ride it. Leathers, gloves and boots could wait (shame on me Embarassed )

It was a Yamaha FZR600

So, the wife and I (son as well Rolling Eyes ) set off on the 30 odd miles from Essex, across the Thames via the Dartford crossing and into Kent, with the £600 asking price in my wallet.

The quick spin around the block was uneventful, the race can sounded superb, the bike seemed a snatch at a couple of quid.

Before riding home followed by the Mrs, I rang H&R insurance for a superb quote of £172 TPFT, then off we went.

5 minutes down the road, I stalled in the middle of a cross junction and could not find neutral for love nor money Mad So I pushed the bike to the side of the road and frantically started stomping on the gear lever until the little green light came on. The bike would not start even with the clutch pulled in Evil or Very Mad

I needed some petrol, so in went £15 before zooming down the A2 in very windy conditions.

It was evident fro the off that this was not as powerful as the ZXR, but undoubtably felt lighter. The bike pulled and accelerated well, but lacked the raw grunt.

As we approached the Dartford tunnel toll booths, I started to filter a little (free for bikers Laughing), went through behind my car and overtook her giving the wife the birdie (bad mistake Shifty). Then with the Leo vince can roaring within the tunnel, the bike started to loose power, the revs wouldn't pik up. I had deja vous, its the ZX all over again Shocked

Down a gear, nothing

Down another, still nothing

Down again, the engine feels that it has cut out Thumbs Down

I move the bike to the kerb to not hold up traffic too much, the bike comes alive, revs pick up ans so does the bike.

Next thing I know is that I hav landed on my right shoulder and are sliding down the tunnel under the bike, I have the composure or reaction to let go of the handle bars and the bike spins away. In all the bike went for 20-30 yards on its side.

I layed on the tarmac for a second and subconsciously moved everything, it all worked, nothing broken Thumbs Up

Took the new lid off and was tempted to bounce this on the floor as so frustrated with the crash.

The geezer behind me saw everything, and ruched to help me move the bike. It must of been in gear cos it was a bugger to push, so it was dragged backwards and left up against the side of the tunnel. There was a huge oil spillage were the crank case on the right hand side had craked and smashed wide open.

10 minutes later, the police and rescue were there.

After a while, the bike was on a flat bed, me in the back with my pride well and truly dented.

My wife was surprised that the only damage was a bit of road rash to my right forearm (no leathers or gloves). My shoulder and hip are killing me Crying or Very sad

My new toy is stuck at a police check point awaiting collection and all I have is the right indicator (it snapped off).

I am now musing what to do Thinking

Apart from the crank case and indicator, the fairings are pretty good. I think I prevented the bike skidding on them too much.

I'll sleep on it Wink

The side stand switch was a bit dodgy were it needed lubing, he told me that much, may be why I had trouble starting after stalling it

Damn, at least you're ok.

You could always sell it to Extreme3d, that is if he wants it for parts for his project FZR.

Possibly good news Praying

Got the bike towed thanks to the nice guys at On Time Recovery and it looks pretty much cosmetic:

Arrow Broken crank case

https://www.bikechatforums.com/files/fzr600_001.jpg

Arrow Craked screen

https://www.bikechatforums.com/files/fzr600_007.jpg

Arrow Scratched fairings and body work

https://www.bikechatforums.com/files/fzr600_002.jpg

Arrow Scratched bar end / front brake lever

https://www.bikechatforums.com/files/fzr600_008.jpg

Arrow Broken indicator

The only problem that may be underlying is that there is some resistance when the bike is pushed as if something is either touching or slightly binding Confused

Will get new crank case, some oil and see if she starts Thumbs Up

It was quite nerve racking to be riding an unfamiliar bike on unfamiliar roads.

Its quite windy out there, but you'll be fine Thumbs Up

Lets have plenty of pics of the new ride Wink
