Hey guys….
The BCF stunting vids really impressed me, and made me want to go out and stunt a bit more.
I know I am a decent rider but I don’t seem to be able to get comfortable with what I’m doing, some of the guys here look so natural doing stunts, and others seem to show no fear.
I’m not too sure what’s stopping me from getting a few stunts going smoothly.
At the moment I have the Ninja and have attempted a few wheelies, I got the front wheel up and really didn’t like the feeling, perhaps because from my point of view, the bikes huge and expensive so I don’t want anything to go wrong.
The Ninja is being sold ASAP because I have the VFR running sweet now, perhaps I’ll practise some on that, do you guys think it is easier trying stuff out on a bike that is powerful enough but a decent step down from the Ninja, what I mean is, will I find it less daunting because it’s a smaller bike?
I was thinking perhaps getting a crappy 250 or bigger, scrambler, maybe to get the confidence up on a back wheel, but I wondered if it is a different ball game on a sports bike.
Any advice welcome….

It is generally safer to start stunting on a big powerful bike - why? Because you don't have to try as hard.
Something like, say, my ZX9 with loads of power and downgeared you only need to turn snap the throttle a little in first and it'll pop it's head up and keep it up with the wide and fairly meaty torque.
While, trying to wheely a smaller bike, such as a vfr with standard gearing, means you have to get it up quite high at the right height.
Being scared when it comes up is exactly what should save you from crashing your bike - for a start wheelies always seem much bigger than they are. I can remember getting filmed and thinking 'wow, that looks cool' then realising it's only a foot off the ground . Thus before you get to the point that it could actually get dangerous, you've already slammed it back to ground.
However, the ZX7 isn't really a great wheelie bike either.
If you down gear the VFR a bit, they aren't too bad for getting it up fairly easily - though when I tried this the less stunt-experienced owner was still having trouble on it.
However once you get confident with getting near the balance point, a lower powered bike can be better because it means you have to work it to keep it there, rather than relying on the power a bit below the balance point where it feels more comfortable. |

Hi
Its all about getting used to the bike doing wired stuff.
Im completly shit a wheelies but I'm slowly getting used to lifting the front, its taking me a while. partly beacuse I havent gone out to specificaly try and get better at wheeling, more of oohh look bikes "show off mode".
It take a while and alot of time being scared, but if you practaise enough you'll get used to it.
Though some people arnt fazed by the whole stunting thing, and do an arm chair wheelie at the 1st attempt cunts

If I wanted to learn 'stunts' I'd want to learn on a heap of a bike -something that works and is relatively torquey, but something I wouldn't care about chucking down the road. I wouldn't be wearing my Arai either...(my cheap old wet-weather Shark lid instead).
Best of luck with the ZX7R sale, there's life in the old NC yet |

A lot of people seem to be really paranoid about crashing bikes while doing stunts.
As I've said in the past, I reckon you're much more likely to crash your bike in day to day riding than when first starting out wheelies etc.
Riding down a country lane fast is much much more likely to see a severly mashed up bike than doing something that your body immediately stops at a point way before it actually gets dangerous.
So, for first learning to wheely, I suggest you use your nice shiny bike and get an old ratty bike to go and ride down those country lanes on .
When you get used to wheelies and are managing to consistantly keep it high, it may be another matter.
For wheelies, both my DR600s and RD350 were quite good for me learning (in each case around £600 each), but may not be great for a total novice as you have to clutch it up quite high to keep it up there. |

Hi
Its not a gixxer thou, it dosnt make the power of a gixxer thou, it dosnt cost the same as a gixxer thou, its in a lower insurance group than a gixxer thou, its not meant to be a gixxer a thou, its an sv1000, it does what it does, and more than enough for the road.
If i wanted a shed load of power id have bought a gixxer thou.
Anyway I will not say anymore on the subject, im not siggi you know.
Or am i

Another possibility is trying to pick up some dodgy fairings for it when you want to go out and try something new.
I've only done normal, power wheelies, and I couldn't see myself flipping it unless I cocked up spectacularly or tried too hard. Getting the front wheel a foot off the ground has you hanging on for dear life and thinking 'Christ I'm going for 12 o'clock here!'
The only way, technique wise, I could see a normal wheelie going wrong for me, is by landing on the front wheel while it's not straight, and since I have a habit of coming down hard (on blown fork seals it could make for some dodgy landings.
I'll try stoppies when my brakes have been overhauled, but frankly they don't appeal to me as much. Seem a bit scary. |
