Hi guys,

sorry to bring this subject up again.

Over the past 5 or so years I've had my eyebrow and top of my ear pierced. Each time, I've had to remove the said piercing due to a large swelling around the area. It's usually quite red and sore to the touch, and it looks like the body is trying to reject it.

I'm pretty sure the bars (or hoops) that were used fro my piercings were surgical steel. If I wa sto go for a titanium bar instead, would these be less cahnce of rejection? Or is there some kind of test I can have done to see if I'm suitable for piercing at all?

Cheers!

Did you follow cleaning instructions? Plus was the piercer a recommended one, or was it a bit sketchy?

I've never had a problem with my piercings, and I've used SS in my tongue, and Titanium in my lip.

Have you taken both out and thinking of a new piercing or are you trying to stick with the eye-brow and ear?

Piercing rejection is fairly logical, it makes sense that your body does not like having a bit of metal in it, especially in certain places (on the surface, in front of bones). However, difference bodies react differently to piercings.

Eye-brow piercings will always grow out, it sits in front of bone which makes it really easy for the body to slowly ease it out. Swelling is a bit more uncommon though.

The top of the ear is cartilage, again, not the greatest place to have a piercing and are prone to getting snagged (and swelling if your body doesn't want it there in the first place).

In short, there is no 'test' for piecing rejection, some just suit piercings better than others but the two you have are not necessarily a good indication of whether you're suited to them or not.

It is worth trying a different type of metal as you never know, but I haven't heard of anyone being allergic to surgical steel (titanium is usually recommended to stop a piercing from 'migrating' e.g. nipple)

I had the top of my ear done twice
It rejected quite quickly both times, swelling and all that gubbins

I was advised that I was just one of those people who wouldn't get on with a piercing there, and do not try and get it done again

My ears were done 3 times lower down and were fine

My nose rejected a piercing after about a day

Guess my body is picky Smile

Sorry for dragging this back up, but I never really did reply.

The rejection happened over a space of a week or two. I did clean it. I wear contact lenses so bathed it in saline 2-3 times a day.

I was thinking about getting my tongue pierced, but not too keen if the other parts have swollen and gone manky in the past.

Oh, it was a reputable piercer. A big scary tatoo place from the outside but then very official once you step through the door. The 'piercing room' is a complete white wash and all the sealed equipmen is placed out ready so the customer can clearly see...

Perhaps I should just go for it! Twisted Evil

I've got my tongue done, and it effects people in different ways, for me it swelled up a little, and I had no problem eating, but for others they had it done and it was swollen for a week or more. I suggest if you do get it done, take a few days off work so you don't have to talk to people with a fat tongue Laughing

Had mine done just before I was 16 Embarassed Birthday present from my mum Cool

Got my lip done last year for my 21st Laughing

I guess the next mile stone is 30 - so I need to think of another I want done.

But don't tell my other half Wink Shhh! He hates my lip....

i found that surgical steel made my top ear turned red and sore if i didnt keep on top of it, gold sleepers are the best, hardly have to clean it as its small and moves around and never had any problems, hasnt been out for 2 years :S

After being periced a fair few times now (20) at last count I leave my percings alone completley unless their is discgarge our blood the i carefully use a mild salt water soultion.

Most peoples problem is that they kill all the new skin with stuff that doesnt need to be on them

In some countries you cannot pierce with Surgical steel and have to use titanium. . .

Surgeons stick plenty of titanium and alloys of cobalt, chromium and molybdenum inside people every day. Plenty of stainless steel has been implanted too.

I think it's the grade of the SS that matters. . . I'm not too sure though
