PostPosted: 16:18 - 22 Jun 2006    Post subject: Carrying a second helmet/jacket.. help please! Reply with quote

Does anybody have any suggestions on how I can carry a second helmet and spare jacket back to base?

Its a 100 mile trip almost all motorway.
I already have a full tank bag so thats not an option. I do not want to buy any more luggage just for this one journey.

I was thinking about packing the jacket around the helmet to make it a more sturdy package and using a cargo net (possibly mankinds best ever invention!) to attach it to the rear seat.. however this would cause even more havoc with the already bad crosswinds on the M62 and I've heard horror stories of things going under the back wheels when netted to the back.

The bike is a CBR600 so hardly a tourer for luggage practicality Confused

Thanks in advance..

A cargo net would easily do either of those items. Doing them both might require some extra thought, but should be possible. As for side winds etc, as long as you are aware of the extra luggage, it shouldn't be a problem at all.

Once you've got everything packed and secure, tug on a few bits and see how sturdy it is. If you are that concerned, simply stop on the hard shoulder every so often and reassure yourself that nothing is slipping.

IF using a rucksack, put the jacket in it and 'net the helmet to the bike. I'd hate to think what would happen if you had an off and landed on your back with a helmet underneath your spine....

I was just writing that in my reply.. I can imagine which would break first Neutral

Think I'm going to have to try with a cargo net.. I might be able to put them both together, wrap a ground sheet or something around them to keep them together and chuck them on the back.
Or buy a backpack... Confused

Or... strap the lid to the back and wear both jackets Michelin Man stylee Laughing

That can work!!!

I've done it for 5 miles before, but thats it...

Probably not best to do it for 100 miles.

Whats the difference? If you come off closer to your home your still going to break your arm the same as if you come off 200 miles away. Wink

Oh and Cargonet...Bets invention ever! Thumbs Up

You'll be fine with a cargo net mate. I did a 100 mile trip (80 miles of M1) and had a helmet and jacket netted to the pillion seat. I folded the jacket so it was square, put the helmet on top of that and had no probs. It stretches the net quite a bit so theres no give on it to move about at all Thumbs Up

Another thumbs up for cargo net. I have been miles with a lid strapped on with a net without any problem whatsoever. As long as you get it nice and tight, the helmet/jacket won't move and you won't even notice it is there.

Cargo Net Thumbs Up

you cant go wrong with that, put the jacket in a rucksack or just bundle it around the helmet and cargo it.

just make sure you don't get a cheep jobbie... my free cargo net from SuperBike mag gave up the ghost on my mates bike on the way to Lincoln (very funny!) my other propper cargonet did its job happily Smile

Beat me to the punch...

As chris said, Fold the jacket up as a small as possible, put it on the seat and helmet over it, force of the bungee pushing down on the helmet will make everything more secure than just the lid alone...

Worked for me loads of times....

Knox Aero Backpack rrp £29.99.

has a zip out net for a helmet, is expandable and will fit 'non bulky' two piece, gloves and boots if packed wisely.

I use mine for this purpose.

linky to a special offer £24.95 https://www.sounddistribution.co.uk/products.asp?recnumber=231

cheers

I've done exactly what you suggested, helmet wrapped in cargo net, bungeed on and cargo netted.

I developed a nervous twitch at first, always checking it was still there til i stopped being a girl and it was fine.

Go for it.

Cheers for all the good advice!

I think i'm going to go with the cargo net idea, unless I suddenly develop an urge to go gear shopping on sunday (which often happens when I 'accidently' ride past a bike shop on my sunday outing Smile ) and find a decent backpack.

Still not sure about crashing with it on though Confused

Cheers everyone..

Trouble with the backpack is its going to break your spine in a crash Thumbs Down

What i used to do was net it down and use 2 cable ties each side if i was going far/feeling paranoid/it was windy out (like 200 odd miles via cat and fiddle in near galeforce winds Shocked)

Invest in a very strong adjustable net, you'll not regret it Thumbs Up
