all you with bike-cams.... some advice please

I'm toying with the idea of a bike-cam setup.

What would be recommended options.

Bullet-cam, and something like an archos media wossname?
small DV cam attached somewhere (does this have an input for a bullet-cam too?)

how and where is the best place to attach, on the bike, and possibly lid.

where's the best place for mic placement if you want sound? don't want just wind-noise.

anyone played with wiring an intercom into the audio input?

I'm thinking of making up some commentary rides, so I can show others how I think while I'm riding, using the autocom. Would also allows others to critique my riding without having to follow me.

The kit looks quite expensive.
I'd get a cheap one from ebay and get the rest of the bits yourself, unless you've got lots of money to spend for ease anyway.

On a road bike, camera under the seat. Mic normally works well under there as well.

that kit needs an analogue AV input.

Do most bullet cams use analogue AV still?

Any recommendations for a camera?

Very few DV cameras have AV-in.
Have a search on here and you should find some info.

At the moment, I'm playing with various things for recording my racing with solidstate media, however the options for decent resolution are limited and I'm having trouble with the fairly severe vibrations from racing.

That's the sort of thing off ebay, you only actually /need/ the camera - the rest can be got from maplins if needed.

For positioning, if you want dramatic shots, somewhere low down so it looks quite fast when leaning over.
Helmet cam is good for assesing riding but asking for trouble if stopped by police.
I find in a front air vent can often be quite good for unobstrusive on a road bike.

I'd also make an attempt to keep the speedo out of shot (depending how wide an angle it is )

so are all bullet cams pretty much the same? all the Maplin ones seem to be for CCTV type use, or is that just their main market?

You can get that kit for £90-100 of eBay, there are some really good soildstate recorders over in the USA with AV-IN that l cam across when looking for one but they were around the £300-400 mark so l picked up a cheap mustec one which does me fine when l can get around to wiring the bullet cam on to the bikes 12v supply so l do not have to rely on the crap battry life the 8 1.5v batterys supply.

I use an RF Concepts Bullet Cam together with a Sony MiniDV camcorder. Yes, the camcorder has to have an AV-In option (mine's the DCR-TRV22E - might find one on eBay?). I house the camcorder under the rear seat of the bike together with the mic (this cuts out all wind noise, but still retains the engine and exhaust sounds). I then run the cable to the front of the bike and attach the bullet cam either under the front light or on the tank.

You can see some of my videos here as examples, including a crash test in which it held up perfectly. The picture here shows the bullet cam on the tank and the cable running down the side. A pretty neat solution overall.

Feef Hey Dude, bit of forum crossing here...

I tried a cam in a few postions on my storm, the front forks dont seem to like it too much but you get a great view from behind the screen.

By far the best was helmet cam though as you get a much better feeling of speed and smooth transitsion when viewing.
