Does anyone rent by themselves on minimum wage and run a bike? Min wage as in around abouts 11,000k a year or 5.50/6.00 an hour? I can't seem to work out how it would be do-eable around here. How much disposable change do you see from your wage for socialising or whatever after bills and food?

How long does it take to get a council house? I've heard it can take forever, those coucil houses garages people I know have waited 2 years to get one so i'm not holding much hope for that.

Moving might be the only option Mad Any sorrounding areas around newport/cardiff that are cheap to live?

On that kind of income you may be entitled to Tax Credits to top up yuor pay (check here https://www.taxcredits.inlandrevenue.gov.uk/HomeNew.aspx )

You may also be entitled to Housing Benefit, which is paid by your local authority so the rules for claiming acan vary according to where you live. It won't necessarily cover all your rent but you might qualify for something towards it. https://www.cardiff.gov.uk/content.asp?Parent_Directory_id=2865&nav=2867,2891,2900

Just gave that working tax credit one a spin and this is what it says Shocked

Your household is not entitled to Working Tax Credit because of the following reasons:-
- Claimant(s) who do not have children must work 30 hours per week or more and be aged 25 or over and are not disabled.

Crying or Very sad how stupid is that (i'm 23 and work 37), if anyone needs it more it'll be younger folk.

You can rent your own Gaff, but running a bike and having a life might be a problem.
Lodging however would be a better bet, you are practically living on your own, some people convert big garages in big houses and rent them out, my mate does that.

it might be about £60 a week

count yourself lucky people in NI earn less than people in england. every job is minim way at £5.05 an hour.

i had to move back home i could not afford my rent. its crap, it raelly gets me. some people get paid less than min cause they off the books and the foreigners get paid pennys.

not many jobs over here anyway . everyone on the dole cause its more money. i am not though i am still job hunting.

my fist place cost me £50 a week wheni was young.

rent now here is up to £150 a week and nothing is less than £110. you may think thats cheap but it is not!

Worked it out a while back, ended up with a pitiful amount of spending money, and I'm a fairly frugal/cheapskate type of person. A house/flat share or being a lodger made thing's easier, though it still didnt work out great on paper. Forget about having a holiday as well, and if something goes wrong your going to struggle.

its hard but possible you just have to utterly pack those hours in , so like 35 hour weeks will net you just over £100 , you have to pack in way over 50 hours a week to be able to live to a reasonable standard , and not be knocked down when some big expense occurs like tyres insurance or what not,

its also unsustainable , on min wage people are moving backwards so its really just a halfway house to try get something better ,

either that or cash in hand .....

*Ponder's the shortage of male prostitutes* Laughing

On a more seriousness note why don't you do some freelance then? Will be a bit hit and miss but could provide some handy extra spending money every now and then. Or start looking for a new job.

kill my knees that would, one of the reasons I got rid of my cars (other than cost) and decided to get a bike was I found bikes easier on the knees and back (no big clutch pedal to keep forcing down). Forces you to keep your back nice and straight too rather than slouch in a car seat.

I've been doing freelance for a year or two which i'll probably still try and do part time if I can, or just do it when I have big bills like insurance/tyres/mot coming up.

Wonder how much it would cost to hook up a double decker with mains/water trailer trash style etc Cool

Just remember, being working class is nothing to be ashamed of. Rather much like masturbation.

Coincidently both give you calluses on your hands.
