Righty ho!

In the next few weeks I'm going to have to do a lot of driving from cheltenham to the isle of dogs, london.

Obviously I'll be coming in on the A40, but I a bit stumped as to how to proceed from there, as I have no knowledge of the roads, I've no idea what's busy and what's not.

Google maps suggests a mental route, going all round the M25, then coming into london from pretty much the top of the M25, which looks stupid to me.

So, any ideas?!

I know a good spot just off the A40 where you could park for free and jump on a tube.

I used to commute the A40 every day by car. It can be pretty shite.

as people have suggested, park somewhere in west london

and get the tube in

west ruislip station is the end of the central line and although the car parking at the station might get expensive, im sure there are other places around there that wouldnt quite cost as much

It's also going to lob you through the congestion charge zone... £8 a day.

I'll PM you the location. Wink

*chokes*

£8?! It was £5 in the good old days of yore!

I've decided that I'm doing it in off-peak hours only now! I'll perhaps do it a couple of times and see what it's like, if it's crap then I'll try the magic spot, but that involves an hour on the choobe. Zzzz.

Failing all that, train it is!

Tube's probably the best bet if you're not familiar with the area.

If you do want to drive, I'd suggest getting off the A40 at Hanger Lane and following the A406 North Circular until you reach the A12, which will take you down through East London straight into Canary Wharf. Watch your speed; there are loads of Gatsos on both the N Circ and A12!

Could stay on the A40 and take a more direct route but there's more chance of you getting lost that way so I wouldn't recommend it.

Wouldn't bother with the M25; you'll encounter serious delays around the Enfield area - major roadworks until 31/12/07.

Londoners esp taxis will see your NTV650 and think mad bastard courier scum and move out the way , commuting has the same effect in Manchester.

There's no 'off-peak' as far as London traffic is concerned, except possibly at 4am in the morning. The route from the A40 to the A12 is not a bad suggestion, except the return journey will take, from Canary Wharf to Hanger Lane about 3 hours, unless you leave at 8pm at night which in that case it will take 60-90 minutes, depending on traffic from Bounds Green to Henlys Corner on the A406.
