Right I got some footage today on my mates camcorder, in clips and I wondered whats the best software to use to edit it together. The clips are in .asf but I do have a converter so that's not really a problem, but Windows Movie Maker breaks down when I try to use it so I can't use that.

Any help appreciated. Thumbs Up

iMovie. Sad Seriously, I'm considering getting a Mac almost entirely because I can use iMovie. It's complicated enough that you can get decent results, unlike Windows Movie Maker, and simple enough that it doesn't take 8 weeks to learn how to use it, like Adobe Premiere Pro. I've gotten 2 A grade courseworks using iMovie.

Avid Free DV seems to be a half decent compromise for Windows, I've heard some decent things. Then there's the branded software, apparently the Sony one isn't that bad. Thumbs Up

How do you mean movie maker breaks them down?

It will break 1 file into clips but if you add them to the movie in order theres no gaps its seamless.

No, it breaks down, as in stops working. It gives an error saying 'The correct filter could not be found to render this film' or something along those lines and refuses to work. Thumbs Down

Avid Free DV is also wang, it won't work at all with most formats. Thumbs Down

If it's breaking down i'd say you need to find a codec that fully supports that format .

As for editing i use Sony Vegas - it's great and pretty simple to use .

Forgive me if wrong.

But won't VirtualDub do all this?

I've used it ages ago for other clips and stuff, all seemed OK.
Give it a blast if its usefull

I tried all the programs, and most of them didn't work, I'm suspecting Ace Codecs pack after reading back through Siggi's old post about his camcorder, and I saw tatter's post of Video Edit Magic 3, so I got that and it is quite good. I got rid of Ace Codecs and installed Windows Media Player 11.

Ta everyone. Thumbs Up
