I really have the urge to try and get a test ride on a ducati 749!!!
i really like the looks, the sound and the personality of them!!!
does anyone have any experiences of the 749, i have heard a lot about them stalling while idling and the famous dodgy electrics!!!!
any views would be helpful!!! ____________________ R6 has been sold - 2004 Honda VFR VTEC now sold too - no bike at the moment |

I think that it's more about the finish rather than the quality. A Ducati won't automatically be less reliable than a Japanese bike if you look after it good and proper, but you can't expect it to last as well as a Honda (for example) if you leave it out in the rain etc...
As others have mentioned, service costs (and general maintenance costs) may be higher, but that's always the price of so-called exotica.
It's funny, 'cos when a European bike needs looking after it's called "unreliable", but if it's a British bike, it's called "character"... ____________________ TiN

Exellent bike, im so much smoother on it than my GSXR750,
Brakes are exellent, engine is very torquey and revvy ( for a twin).
and it beats riding a common as muck japanese bike round.
one peice of advice, they sound absoluty shite with standard cans, and with a Termignoni half system comming in at about £1000, try and buy one with a Termi or leo vince can.
so far no problems its got 2300 miles on it and no hitches, its being serviced at the moment.
The 749s come in 3 types
749 -Showa front forks with a sachs rear shock usually with a pillion seat
749S-Showa front forks with TIN treatment and a showa rear shock both fully adjustable can be had with a pillion or a single seat.
749 R full ohlins carbon fibre goodies and a tuned engine basically.
you can get 749's for quite cheap but in my opinion, its better to go for the S model as it has lots of goodies.

and for added measure i add a video of my bike, to get an idea what a Termignoni ducati sounds like.

if you buy one thats 2 years old make sure its had a service or at the very least a cam belt change, although its not that expensive im getting new belts and service for £255. ____________________ Ducati 1299 Panigale

I had a duke for a year, 365 use, 7000 miles by me.
Never missed a beat.
I was putting too many miles on it and it was losing value fast
Even the basic models have something about them that draws you in.
Unfortunately they do tend to be ridden by ponsey overpaid office types who ride 500 miles per year in the dry only. |

That picture is me at the side of the road in france after a rectifier failure last year, and this thread makes me laugh. If you listen to the chinese whispers from half of the kids who have hardly seen a ducati let alone ridden one then i sugest you try one and make up your own mind.
They are not without fault like any bike and a V twin is not to everyones taste. Older pre 98 bikes suffered from rectifier issues as i know too well (lost 2 in 3 years) and the wires from the gene are not really upto the job but all this is easily fixed. Also the earlier non stretta motors suffer with rocker wear due to taking time for oil to get to the top end after a layup (about 90 seconds if parked for months) older 916's are usualy not too bad for wear, but 748's seem quite prone to rocker death.
The 998's are superb and are the best sorted of the lot.
Later 749's are built to a budget inside the motor and have other issues, 999's are better.
As for engine out at 12k is just bollocks, the 749R is the only one, but it can be done in situ by a competent independant.
749 / 999 series suffer from coil / plug cap failures quite a bit.
Ducati's need to be used and not polished, i have done over 23k on mine with 2 failures both recitifers, now sorted with extra heavy wiring and an aftermarket rectifier, apart from that its had a full top end overhaul to make sure it was A1 which was a full set of valves, guides and seals, and this worked out around £600 inc 1 new rocker which is not bad.
If you think it will cost the same to run as a jap superbike forget it, if your jap bike costs £300 per year to service, then expect £6 - 800 for a ducati (dealer prices, use an independant ducati specialist, bit cheaper but work done to a far better std)
Also many IL4 owners cant take to a V twin, i sold a RRX blade for my 916 and hated it for 6 months, slow and lumpy, a pain in town, expensive, but then it clicked. the handling, sound and experience is not like anything you will get with a IL4
I bought a new 600RR a couple of months back to keep the miles off the RC and 916, sadly it doesnt get used. When going for a ride i seem to keep taking the keys for the 916. Granted the CBR will destroy it up top, and perhaps the handling and braking are better on the CBR, but the CBR is gutless and the most soulless bike i have ever ridden, but i know it will never let me down.
I trust the 916 more than the Honda RC30 for reliability and hassle free factor, the 916 Is quick to 100 but spent after that. it handles well, is much lighter than the CBR in real life, and is actually quite comfy. The 749 in bp form will be quicker than the 916 and comfier still but its looks dont groove me in the slightest.
At the end of the day its your money, buy a good used one and decide for yourself, if you dont like it sell it. But do not listen to people who have no idea but only heard horror stories from years gone by and are possibly jealous (god knows why as they are cheap now and easily affordable if in the market for a modernish superbike. Every brand has its faults, remember honda and its camchains, and rectifiers ? suzuki and electrical and build issues ? kawasaki = corrosion ? etc etc
Good luck with your decision |
