i'm planning on going out tonight on the bike for a while but my rear tyre is starting to worry me now. i do a lot of motorway miles and its squared off a bit now. down the middle their isn't much tread left at all but the sides have plenty left in them.

i want to know if i get pulled by the cops with these do you think i would get done for it? or are they still legal (border line legal will do)

Personally, I think it is illegal. It will do quite a bit more milage before they are completely knackered, but, it is one its way out so get replacements ASAP just to be sure. Thumbs Up

Edit/ Just make sure you don't stop near police.

Edit again/ Forgot to put il in front of legal. (my head is in the shed today)

FWIW the UK legal requirement (over 50cc) is 1mm across 3/4 of the width of the tread pattern with visible tread on the remaining 1/4.

HTH Thumbs Up

looks like it might dump you off if there's a light shower and a greasy corner - just about legal though.

still ok for a bit yet , go to a proper reputable tyre place and they will tell you straight (sharples in Bolton said my tyres were fine even though I thought they were shagged) , disreputable places will tell you they are shagged even if they are not.

Dont use bridgestone BT014's then you will get more than 2 weeks use out of them.

I ripped my rear off in 2 weeks. and swiftly switched to a longer lasting tyre.

Hard to tell from the photos, but if it is legal it will be close. You can check by having a look at the wear indicators in the tread - little raised bits in the tread (marked on the wall by either an arrow or the letters TWI). If there is still tread left above the marker its OK, if the marker is wearing then its not.

Were you doing rolling burnouts with an elephant on the back? Confused

I got over 3500 miles from my 014 before it was replace and thats quite good for a 1000cc superbike.

Hard to tell!
Everyone is guessing they havn't seen it and you don't say what the tread depth is down the middle of the tyre. Question Question Question

Looks illegal to me...cant be 100% without a gauge but a car tyre like that would fail the mot, at least if it was below 1.6 mm instead of 1mm. Looks dodgy to say the least.

Isn't it 1mm accross 3/4 of the width of the tyre?

If so, that should be fine, if not, don't stop near the police Smile.

The tyre looks legal, but I dunno whether they'd let you off with those chicken strips Thinking.

Hi

Think it is illegal. Looks under 1mm to me (although could be wrong on that) and it needs to be the min tread depth over a band 75% of the width of the tyre (eg, don't think 2 bands each 40% of the width of the tyre would be legal).

All the best

Keith

Looks illegal to me as well. My tyre is currently on 1mm (measured it with a tread depth gauge), and it looks deeper than that.

Hard to tell from a photo Liam, but it looks illegal to me. This is a picture of my tyre with about 1mm left in the centre, and it looks a lot more than in your pic. Confused

Edit: BTW Liam ^^^ That is why I didn't fancy the Inverness run. I doubt the tyre would last. Neutral

if the wire ain't showing, get going!

seriously though it does look like it has less than 1mm in the middle of the tyre.. mine looks pretty much like True Blues (nae good with names, sorry Laughing ) and it has about 1mm on it, too.. so probably illegal if you ask me Neutral

just a quick question

would a 'squared off' tire like the one shown be considdered legal irrespective of tread depth.

the reason is I have a set of BT45's on the NSR they have lasted ages and while the tread is well within limits the rear tire is ever so slightly squared and with it having its MOT will it be enough to fail it?

cheers Karma

Don't think you can fail for having a squared tyre.

From BMF:

Quote:
Tyres Must have tread depth of at least 1mm across three-quarters of the breadth of the tread and in a continuous band around the entire circumference. (This is the minimum legal requirement but be guided by your bike handbook for recommended replacement wear levels.)

The 75% band is measured around the centre, so less than 1mm in the central area is illegal.
