Anyone tried it?

https://www.bp.com/sectiongenericarticle.do?categoryId=9009077&contentId=7016847

According to the blurb they seem to think motorbikes will benefit from it, though I did read somewhere it's £2.50 or thereabouts PER LITRE, so over a tenner a gallon. All the sites selling it are in the South (we get gritty washing up liquid for fuel up North Shocked ) These are BP garages:

All Saints Self Serve
Commercial Road, Portsmouth, Hampshire, PO1 4BU
Chicheley Park Connect
Tickford Street, Newport Pagnell, Buckinghamshire, MK16 9BD
Newbury Centre Filling Station
758 Eastern Avenue (A12), Newbury Park, Illford, Essex, IG2 7HU
Newham Way Service Station
Newham Way, (A13 Westbound), Canning Town, London, E16 1QX
Tudor Filling Station
London Road (A20), Allington, Maidstone, Kent, ME16 OHE
Wavendon Gate Connect
Newport Road, Wavendon, Milton Keynes, MK7 7AG

I tried their Ultimate diesel in my car and didn't notice any performance gain, but did get 50 or 60 miles extra from a tank driving normally, having forgotten I'd even put the stuff in. I suspect a bike or car running this 102 octane stuff would need mapping specifically for it, and at that price can't imagine there'd be many that would go to that expense, though the rolling road crowds (Subaru, EVOs etc) on a sunday morning might.

probably do more damage to the engine than good. i believe high octane is only good if the bikes designed for it. causes knock or summit.

most bikes run happiest on 95 octane. some on the "super" 98 octane. but 102 octane Shocked

a technogenius will be along shortly to explain no doubt.

dont think my 96 thundercat will benefit too much from it.

i'l leave that for the top fuel dragsters.

Hi

Octane rating itself will not give you anything on most bikes (will give you a bit on anything using a knock sensor to feedback for altering the ignition timing, think a few BMWs do).

Some Japanese bikes are quoted to use fairly low octane fuel.

Bet the stuff will sell well for those with Skylines and the like.

All the best

Except that anything without any kind of feedback for knock tuned to need it is likely to suffer serious engine damage if you used normal unleaded.

All the best

Idea

Basically octane rating off fuel is rated in 3 ways one off which is RON which we use, Americans use MON and there is a mixture off the two being the third.

What the figure actually means as in 95,97 or indeed in this case 102 is the RON (Research octane number) and is a measure off resistance to knock which is pre-ignition also knowen as detonation.

Anything sold in the UK bike, car, lawn mower even is set up to run on a minimum grade off 95 octane since 4 star went out and as a result this means they if injection engines are MAPed for 95RON

This is where it is important, on engines running higher than standard compression or turbo charged the mixture can become dangerously lean and we all know this leads to chocolate pistons and this is because the 95RON under higher cylinder pressure's will self ignite causing a hot spot and thus killing the engine.

Solution use 97RON and advance the timing a few degrees forward and the flame front will move from the spark more evenly from the plug until it hits the piston dish.

People using 102RON generally have race engines which have very high boost or compression and i believe BP are marketing this fuel to the Racing market not for your 1.2L Corsa

The reason some bikes preform better on 97RON is that they use intelligent tuning as in the ecu detects knock to be lower with higher rating and thus advances the timing giving a more powerful stroke i believe bmw's and V-tecs use this and maybe some other bikes.

You can make your own octane booster from a product called toluene which you mix up to 30% or you can also use avgas in a mix with petrol but mostly unless your jetting or alike is a little on the lean side then i wouldnt think you would see any advantages of 97+RON.

To finish off why people like me with jap rockets use it is because Jap imports come normally MAPed to 100RON fuel as this is the standard in Japan and when MAPed for higher fuel using lower rating can and will result in killing an engine, the American rating i mentioned is a tougher test so ratings are lower for same fuel as in, 95RON = 91MON (Motor Octane Number)

Cool

Hi

The Americans use the Pump Octane Number (PON) which is an average of the Research Octane Number (RON) and Motor Octane Number (MON). Very rough rule of thumb for road fuels the MON figure for a fuel will be 10 points lower than the RON figure for the same fuel.

All the best

so your both talking about all these fuels being in a FI bike/car...but what about carbed?

Exactly the same.

It you get detonation then normally you either retard the ignition or reduce the boost. Some minor benefit may be had from richening the mixture. However bikes with knock sensors (to detect detonation) are not that common, so few bikes can do anything to take advantage of higher octane fuel / prevent engine damage from low octane fuel.

Not many turbo'd bikes around so no option to reduce the boost so that just leaves playing with the mixture (negligable effect, if any unless running lean) or retarding the ignition which looses power. Carbs just means you miss out on richening the mixture even if you have a knock sensor.

My better halfs car certainly feels quicker on super unleaded compared to normal unleaded. However that does have a knock sensor and can adjust the boost to compensate.

All the best

I did mention carb's Wink

You can jet on the lean side and use higher rated fuel to compensate though dyno would need to be done to be sure of ratio, Why do this you ask well you use the smallest jet you can get away with in order to save fuel.

EG, new K&N and high flow pipe will make the bike breath better also making it leaner! unless you re-jet bigger and possible move your needles higher. Move them too high and your now running rich which means wasted fuel and if high enough will foul plugs and hamper performance!

one thing i did forget to mention is that due to the better burn off the higher ratings you will see slightly better mpg than stock premium results will obviously vary but i seen 30-40 extra miles over a tank in the car. Exclamation

I used to know a bike mechanic that worked at PSN scooters and he said that smaller bore 2 stroke engines, esspecially 50-200cc scooters get better power and preformance from using a higher octane fuel. He still today races scooters professionally as well as being a mechanic.

Won't do any harm at all, except make firing up the bike just a tad slower as it burns slower, ie 1second on the starter tit instead of "instant".
I throw a gallon of 110 Leaded thru the ZRX once in a while, doesn't do any good whatsoever. but it does smell nice & makes the inside of the megaphone turn white from the lead coating.
And it's only $5/gallon so thats under 3 quid so it's still cheaper than your usual UK stuff Smile
