Can anyone remember when the SORN legislation came into force?

I think I'm going to have a fight on my hands with the DVLA when I go to tax the 400 on Monday.

I had a quick run through the online thing and as I went through it it said "this bike has not had a valid licence or had SORN declared since 2000 and as the registered keeper you have comitted a criminal offence, we may be in touch with you shortly regarding this." Shocked

I became the registered keeper in Dec 2004 and the previous guy had it from Jan 2004, prior to that I don't know how many people had it since 2000 when it was last on the road.

Since I became the registered keeper I have had nothing from them re licencing it or SORNing it, but I suspect they are going to say that the onus was on me to get in touch with them and try to sting me for fines and/or back tax to at least Dec 2004 when I bought it. Sad

The OH seems to think though that the legislation wasn't in force in 2000 so whoever took it off the road then didn't need to SORN it. Not sure how that would work in my defence but if it's true it's another piece of ammunition I can fight them with if they try it on.

Help me!

If its any consolation it said that for my gpz when i taxed it online and i have the sorn document here in my hand... I suspect its another one of DVLA's bodges which basically means it says that message to anyone who is taxing a vehicle that has expired tax (be it sorned or not).

Only a theory but thats what I thought when I saw it.

Thats pretty sucky, i did have a bike in a similar condition (off the road since 1978!) but sold it so no idea how that would work...

Best bet is to go down to your nearest DVLA office, phoneing or sending letters is completely pointless ime you just get sent in endless mindnumbing circles Thumbs Down

Good luck getting it fixed Thumbs Up

I recently sold a bike which had been off the road for about 15 years, still had the old style log book too, i believe the new owner just went along to the post office and taxed it, no problems at all.

If it's been off the road before 1998 then you're fine. If it hasn't been taxed or SORNd after 1998 though, you might have a bit of fight on your hands!

You could always give the standard excuse and say you sent off the SORN but it must have got lost in the post, but I doubt they'll believe you, especially when you didn't question it when you didn't get a SORN confirmation.
