No intention on lecturing people, honest: how much would smokers here say they spend on cigarettes/cigarette-related stuff in a week?

I ask because my dad has/had a system of saving money which was to simulate a smoking habit by putting some money into a jar each week, which is then only used for fun things. While I don't entirely follow the logic, it seems like a nice way of saving for a motorbike.

So far I've had figures from £10 to £25, both extremes coming from the same person. Shocked

I quit 3 days ago and my wallet already feels heavier.

Though I was getting 50g of GV for less than a fiver and that lasted nearly a month so, with riz and filters I was spending about £10 a month. £2 a week.

I stopped smoking at the beginning of the year so I'm pleased to say I don't spend anything on tobacco anymore Smile
I used to roll my own and would smoke on average 50g of Golden Virginia a week which I would pay £4.50 for.
I'm 6 months into giving up and I'm hoping I've cracked it this time, fingers crossed.

I quit 9 years ago, so I've saved about £10,000 Smile

When I quit, I put the money in a jar which then went to a pc upgrade, camcorder, stuff like that. It was an eye opener to see how quick the cash built up. After about 6 months, we decided the money should go towards loans and credit cards, etc.

50g pack of GV will last me about a month, pay £5 for it, plus lighters and papers is about £6 a month. I have a habit of chewing the papers. Laughing

But if I have money I end up buying straights when I'm out on the piss or on a rideout so that probably comes in at about £20 a month.

£26 a month - I can live without that, and smoking gives me a little element of pleasure in my life. Sad Laughing I have no intention to quit before I'm out of university - I'm happy to carry on killing myself for the next 3 years.

Only really smoke when i'm at college, at work, or out. So about £10 a week, not including the purchase of cigarettes for the sole purpose of using the tobacco inside them.

Don't smoke but I buy the odd 10 pack for the tobacco content if you get my drift.

20 a day of a top brand is approximately:

£5 a day
£35 a week
£150 a month
£1825 a year

of your net income.

To put it in more meaningful terms, that will allow you to buy a brand new GSXR1000 / R1 / ZX10R / CBR1000RR every year (with the trade in from last years bike).

If you pay tax at 22% and NI at 11%, stopping smoking is the equivalent of a payrise of around £225 per month (not that far off £3000 per year).

Excellent, thanks for that. Unfortunately I don't have a bike yet (doing CBT on Monday) so trade-in isn't really an option, unless they want my mum's old (very, very old - it is composed almost entirely of rust) moped. On the upside, I am a scummy student type and therefore do not pay taxes. Very Happy

Nothing, because i never got caught up in it.

I dread to think what my parents wasted though. Both a minimum of 20 a day but anything up to 60. Which over 40 years has got to be at least £200,000 (considering inflation). Shocked

Now calculate how much we all spend on beer. Laughing

Smoking's only a lil chunk out of the income.

Then again, you can live without smoking, longer in fact.

I'd like to see a booze free man.
