Anybody who wants to attend this trip should PM me ASAP so I can include their booking & send them the details for Paypaling/posting a deposit.

On the 4th, 5th and 6th of August I'll be heading to the lake district with the intention of riding all the best roads around there, and having a few mild quadrouple whiskies on the evenings.

A bunch of people from the Northern forum have expressed interest, so here's the plan as it stands:

I'll be arriving in Ambleside late afternoon (3-5pm) on Friday the 4th. Anybody who can make it to Ambleside for that day should do so.

We'll be staying in one or more youth hostels or backpackers hostels, which are to be booked soon.

On Friday night we'll get some grub and beer, and on Saturday morning/afternoon the remainder of the bikes will arrive in Ambleside.

We'll take a good tour around on Saturday, though I haven't confirmed exactly which roads and in which order yet, but there are some truly awesome ones and we're spoilt for choice.

On Saturday night we'll either stay in Ambleside or move somewhere else for a night out (perhaps Ambleside doesn't offer the best bars in the lakes).

Sunday daytime we'll have another ride out, and everyone can disperse late on Sunday afternoon.

Youth Hostels/Backpackers hostels average £10 - £16 per night per head.

Open to suggestions on particular roads/passes to take in from lake district locals.

Please post if you can come only.

I'm in, ambleside is decent for bars from what i've seen. Langdale is another matter, though...

Friday the 4th will be cool Cool i'll get the weekend booked asap.

Do we need to join the youth hostel foundation to book?

Jack

:edit: does anyone have a copy of the good pub guide? Razz

I'll attend this too.

James, I've got a BIG book with full reviews on all the YHA's.
Aimee's tidyed up though so feck knows where it is. I'll bring it along this weekend and we can sort out possible venues.

BTW, did you know some of the YHA's have alcohol licences now too.

I'm going Thumbs Up

I'm also out of the UK until the 25th July, so even If I don't respond be sure to put me down for this.

If anybody from the south wants to meet half way up and be shown the fun roads to the lakes, give me a shout. You don't really want to be on the M6 if you can help it. Smile

Guys, one problem with the YHA's, they all have a curfew. i.e. if you're not back by 10pm or 11pm, they lock the front door.

As such we may be better off with an independently run backpackers hostel, unless someone can identify a particular YHA that has no curfew, or we feel like risking some kind of window-entry mission late at night.

Who'll be arriving on Friday and who on Saturday?

I'll be there on Friday afternoon.

That wasn't the case at the last one I went to mate.

At Exeter there was a number lock on the door which we were issued with upon arrival.

Not that we needed it really, we were all in bed by about 9pm! Embarassed

Really? I thought it was a national policy. We'll find out beforehand to make sure.

They all have key-codes now. It used to be an inforced curfew when they had an 18 or under age limit. Now that they have 'modernised' it's a key code so staff don't have to work 24/7!!

Woot!

Now the question is how many rooms do we need to book; That's going to be tricky given the rate of dropouts etc.

Any suggestions? Shall we just book rooms for people who are positive, and tell anybody else to book their own?

Count me in, get money off people before you book a room for them, that way you don't end up out of pocket in the case of a dropout or two. I'll be there on the friday (providing the bike doesn't explode).

What's your email address so i can paypal you the money for booking the youth hostel?

Just a quick question, is it not worth asking the specific youth hostel you have in mind to check the curfew thing, there may be regional differences.

i think my bike would be a lot safer in the lake district than it is where i usually park it, a few feet from dodgy smack head scum

We'll chain all the bikes together, really close to each other so nobody can even site on them, and I'm sure they'll be fine.

So the attendance list so far is:

JackCheese
NSRSparkie
Me
extreme3d
Villers
Black Knight
colin1

So that's 7, if we can confirm a few more people we could book 10 beds or so.

I just need to check the general consensus on where's best to stay here.

Ambleside was suggested earlier but that was just a stab in the dark really. Can anybody in the know suggest anywhere different?

If not, we'll just book Ambleside this week and hope it turns out alright, but I'd rather hope someone with a bit of local knowledge can give some guidance!

I'll book 10 places and that should cover it, if we end up with 11 or 12 people then they can just kip on the floor or blag an extra room or whatever. I dont think a deposit is neccessary.

I'm not fussed, ambleside isn't far from keswick or kendal (ie the major towns), and they make for good days out.
Hawkshead village and Grizedale forrest aren't too far either IIRC.
