Quick question that may be simple to answer but i can't seem to find an answer to it on the DVLA website etc.

I'm going to view a bike on Tuesday which is MOT'd but not taxed as the owner hasn't renewed since he got a bigger bike, which i've assumed is going to be more than say a month ago.
So if i do end up buying the bike i thought i can just go to the closest Post Office and get it taxed so i can ride it home. But then i realised the V5 will need to be sent off to be changed into my name, at which point i also realised i will need the V5 to tax the bike down the Post Office won't i?

So i'm confused whether i need to wait for the lazy b*stards at DVLA to send me the V5 with my name on it until i can tax it (which would be unbelievably inconvenient), or is there some way that i can get it all done face to face at a regional Post Office on the day?
Or is there any type of rule whereby you can ride an untaxed bike if the application is 'pending' for example?

Hope this makes sense, i'm struggling to understand myself to be honest! Sad

Cheers,

SB Thumbs Up

You need your insurance cover certificate as well, so you need to get that before you buy the bike if you plan to ride it home and that person has no insurance on it.

If you need to get tax, I expect you could use that temporary 'New Keeper' section of the V5 at the post office.

Oh right cool, that would make sense.

My other concern was whether any old Post Office would be able to tax it if it has been off the road longer than a set period e.g. a month, or will i need to go to a regional one if this is the case?

Cheers Thumbs Up

Right well i don't think he has declared it SORN (i'm going to try and ring him in a sec to clarify) so therefore it's not like i will be able to take the SORN document to the post office and get it taxed.

Does this mean then that he will have to get it sorn'd before i can buy it and tax it?

Does the online SORN facility on the DVLA website provide you with a printout that will be valid to use at the post office?

Thanks Thumbs Up

I would think he has SORN'd it otherwise he would have been fined by now. He should have the Sorn notification with him if he hasn't given it it you. If he did it on the tinternet then they send it through the post a couple of days later.

Oh shit really!

Froggy - So your saying that the New Owners Supplement doesn't suffice for the Post Office?

Should i try and get him to tax it while it's still under his name then, before i go and see it?

Ok thanks FG.

Well i'm confused because i finally mangaed to get through to the DVLA earlier and he said i will be fine to take the new owner supplement to any registered Post Office and get it taxed, regardless if it is past the 14 days that you are allowed until you have to declare SORN. So this made me happy.

But then i was reading on the DVLA's website and it basically contradicted what the guy had told me, saying that i need to fill out a V10 form and can only get it taxed at a local DVLA office due to the license being out of the 14 day allowance period!

So basically i think the guy i spoke to was bullsh*tting! Great... Rolling Eyes

Anyone have any more info/ answers?

Cheers

UPDATE -- I have now found out he HAS declared it SORN.

So can anyone be CERTAIN that i can take the SORN declaration and new keepers supplement to the Post Office and tax as normal?

Yes, I can, I've done it.

You're making it a squillion times more complex than it is.

Why take the SORN declaration? Fill in form V10, take insurance cover note, MOT and new keepers suppliment and hand these four things to the post office person. They'll take your money and give you a tax disc.

There's even a bit on the V10 form about it being SORN'd.

No.

When you tax it SORN is automatically cancelled, just tax it as normal.

I know from experience you CAN use the new keeper slip provided you have an insurance certificate.

@ Luxy -- It wasn't that i didn't read your post but Froggygirl had said that they didn't take it when she tried using it at the Post Office so i just wanted confirmation/ proof. Thumbs Up

Thanks for your help though, turns out the bike is on the register anyway as a 'total loss' so i won't be going to see it after that. Sad

Guess i'll just keep looking....
