I read about doing this on a website before. I can't remember where.

Either way - instead of using the clutch to go up a gear, it advised just letting off the throttle and then changing gear without even touching the clutch.

Anyway, I've been trying it today and whilst it is a lot faster, and seems to keep the engine revs a little higher when moving up a gear, the bike does "jump" a little (as you might expect) when you do it. On a faster bike I suppose it might even jump a little more.

What's the point? Well the website said that it helps to lower wear and tear on the clutch... which I guess is true... but what's your opinion?

Do you use the clutch when moving up a gear? Why (not)?

Sometimes I don't, but my bike (CG125) doesn't really like clutchless changing.

Generally I don't use the clutch changing up cos I'm lazy or if it's safe, fiddling around with something with my other hand.

No, not that.

I've heard about this jump and I don't seem to get it when I do it.

Hmm.

I slightly depress it with one finger.

Pull Shift Release works fine for me and allows for some really quick shifts Thumbs Up

Upward on a cg its very easy, in fact it got to the point i'd rarely use the clutch Razz downwards it was more tricky.. takes practiceing but its entierly doable.. (have you changed the oil recently? gearchanges are harder with ditty oil)

Its all down to getting the revs in the right place, and depends mainly on your gearbox as to how easy it will be..

As for reduceing wear and tear on the clutch.. the point of a clutch is to match the engine/wheel speed, which reduced the wear on gearboxes... Now check the prices on gearboxes against clutches Wink

I do it on mine occasionally the same reason i blip the throttle on downchanges, it sounds cool and its fun, it serves no purpose on the road and done wrong can do more harm than good..

I do clutch less changes if I am having a scratch or something, it doesn’t make my bike jump and I’m on a ZX7R.
If done properly you should jolt the bike, and you loose less rpm when doing it.

Not really worth doing unless you absolutely need to get from point A to point B as fast as possible (ie racing). But most of us still do it.

It can be useful on low powered bikes with a narrow powerband when going uphill. If you use the clutch slowly and smoothly the revs can drop too much and the engine bogs down.

Imo (based solely on common sense, not fact) both the clutch and gearbox will wear quicker then with nice smooth clutched changes. I do it on mine occasionaly, both up and down the box but i'd be weary of doing it too much on a bike with a weak box such as some Yamaha's.

i do clutchless gear changing from 3rd to 4th and 4th to 5th usually, just because it saves me having to worry about the clutch, as long as i smoothly run up to 9k revs i just let go of the throttle and kick, and i go again, no problems

i dont like changing down without the clutch though, i tend to lock up the back wheel :/

They are on MotoGP bikes too, but they still don't use them. (Apart from dipping the clutch in under uber hard braking)

i thought the motogp bikes had an automatic clutch, so that the bike does it for them when they ask it to change gear?

Rarely use it going up the box from 3rd onward as its smoother, far better not using it if i'm 2 up.
I always always use it going down a gear.

Once you have learnt to ride smooth you'll be quicker, less clunky and less tired by using clutchless changes.

Anyone who doesn't believe me can ride pillion with me and i'll show you, it will feel as smooth as an automatic.

yeah they are Toby, how do you propose youre going to stop at the lights without one (admittedly you could go into neutral), or do a hill start. Clutches are there for a reason but their design purpose is not "a thing for when you change gears" its just there to disengage drive when you need to. You shouldnt cause any damage when clutchless shifting as bike boxes dont use synchromesh, standard car gearboxes can be damaged by clutchless shifting, but dog boxes in rally cars can be shifted clutchless just like a bike. Clutchless shifting wont make you significantly quicker, but it feels good and I mostly do it purely out of lazyness. Laughing
