Anyone been watching lost? I usually pride myself in not being into watching tv series, but bloody hell its addictive. Could this be the best series ever made?

"How can we get millions of mugs to watch hour upon hour of advertising...?" This seems to be the winning formula: pitch to the lowest possible common denominator, employ the cheapest script-writers in town (cheap because they're talentless) and hype the resultant turd through the shit-house roof.
"Look, something exciting's about to happen...so cut to another scene, and when you cut back to the 'exciting' bit it'll already be over and we won't have had to pay a penny for props or special effects! And let no scene last longer than 20 seconds...if it works for soaps it'll work for us."
Unmitigated dreck, almost as bad as Big Brother.
But I'm repeating myself. Again. |
That's a bit harsh, the season 2 finale included at least 10 minutes of some very expensive stunt work. I would say the only thing Lost is 'guilty' of is stringing out stories far too much, to get as long a run as possible out of them. And halfway through season 2 I think they realised their folly, because things picked up, very quickly.
The writers are unimaginative, but talented. They write a blisteringly obvious script - but let's face it, this isn't high class television. It's drama for the masses. These days, you can't produce an intelligent show, and expect it to be a roaring success. Look at South Park - it's 20 minutes of fart jokes with a social commentary tacked on, yet it's one of the most popular programmes in the world. Look at One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest - undoubtedly a classic piece of literature, and the film was reputed to be one of the best of all time - yet they left any and all references to the story being a metaphor for the state of America out of the film, because it wasn't 'commercial'.
I digress, but I think you place too much importance on how 'good' it is, and expect too much of writers who have just been told to write exciting material that everyone will like.
And I do refuse to watch 20 minutes of adverts for 40 minutes of programming, so I download it instead. But that isn't the producers' fault; it's the networks. |

Seen series one and two, it does get addictive, will probably watch series 3 when it comes out next year. I have to agree they do drag it out a bit, which after a while gets annoying. ____________________ Rieju MRX 50 Castrol Edition |

I don't know about "good", but I do expect programs to be intellectually engaging unless aimed at children or special-needs adults. So that's about 90% of programs down the shitter then.

I couldn't agree more, I would much prefer to watch something which gave you food for thought; but the idiots out there think they're intelligent for watching Lost, and whilst I enjoy an intellectual programme as well, Lost is a good 'let your brain rot' programme.

It's an ongoing problem with having an IQ higher than 80, or an inability to de-tune one's intellect...pretty much everything on TV is addled shite, and Lost is a prime example.
Good point about the advertisement-to-program ratio, that was a big factor in my refusing to watch it past episode two or three in the first place. A painfully non-eventful and drawn-out story-line with adverts every ten fucking minutes; outrageous and fuck off. |
I think if they had stopped trying to milk the cash cow so badly, they would have a better, and more successful, programme. As it stands, you sit through an episode thinking 'wow'. Then you get to the end of it and think - 'Wait a bloody minute, none of the existing storylines went anywhere, but they started another 3'.
I think it's a fundamental flaw which makes the programme so damn frustrating. As a soap opera, as you so rightly call it, it's pretty standard - the one exception being that they never bother wrapping up a story! They just leave it floating and start a new one. It's the perfect way to keep viewers watching.
Whilst I watch Lost and do like it as a bit of sludge to feed on my intellect, I'd like to think I see it for what it is rather than thinking it's the amazing, intellectual show that it's being portrayed as. |
