RC30?, is that a facsimilie of the RC45?

I saw an RC45 go for £11K a few weeks ago , absolutely mint though.

Missing the point though.

You can get any jap litre bike for almost 1/2 the cost of a ducati and will go faster, but its about soul, heritage, beauty and exclusivity.

The RC30/45 bikes are legendery - so yeah, if that one was in very good nick and exactly as he described it, its not that bad a deal, look at this one.

Would i bollocks. I wouldn't pay the inflated prices any of these old vfr's go for.

The same mentality that makes that "worth" 8 grand is the same one that makes a Picasso £1,000,000 and an equally good painting by an unknown name worthless.

Agree with Mr. Evo - I wouldn't spend £8k on that particular example, but would (if I could) expect to pay up to £10k for a fine example.

Some people don't get why they're as good as they are - it's a classic bike in the same lines as a Vincent Black Shadow, Honda CB750K4, Kawasaki Z1000, Yamaha R7, etc are. On paper, in comparison to modern day tackle, they don't seem very appealing. But there's so much more to them than just bhp figures and quarter mile times.

And let's not start debating priceless works of art by ground breaking Spanish abstract artists...

*Sigh* It's not a VFR - it's an RVF.

There's a world of difference.

Exactly. Nothing significantly better than a normal 3 door, gets beaten in pretty much every aspect by equivelent modern cars, but still goes for a premium because of pub talk.

I was under the impression the original race bikes were the RVFs and the road bikes (many of which were used as racers) were the VFRs? Unless I'm mistaken?

If I knew more about cars I guess I could answer that....

The original RC/NC30's were VFR's. The later race bikes I believe were the RVF's.

They have quite incredible handleing. Very neutral and planted. Tony Scott was able to get the engines to produce in excess of 155bhp, enough to snap the crank.

Every bike hand built by HRC, the quality is very high and more than 2500 were made so not really that rare either. What is rare is finding a good one which will set you back in the 10G range.

Thos Ebay ones are worth about 4-6.5G no more.

I think you would be very surprised at how well bikes like this and the GSXR750RK keep up with modern bikes. Being sigle seaters the suspension is a LOT better than modern bikes with two seats that have to work over a much broader range. Don't discount old bikes, some will be a lot faster than you think.

I would pay 10 large for a very good one, but then I already own a rare bike thats worth more and know what I would be getting. Very Happy

I wouldnt pay that personally, but they do make phenomenal money. They are apparently a great bike, but have some cooling issues, to the point that they pretty much cant be ridden in traffic. I think that if i had a collection of bikes id love to have one, but as a daily ride you couldnt justify it, too impractical, and I couldnt justify putting commuting miles on it. Smile

A mint condition, 15 year old RC30 should be worth more than a brand new, straight out of the factory, GSXR1000. Make sense now?

No, not for either of these two examples. If I was in the market for one of these bikes then I would pay what it takes and to answer another thread about distance, from anywhere in the UK.

it's still £8k for a dropped, and repaired 24 year old bike.

yes it's a classic, but it's not worth that money for a crashed, fixed and cosmetically wonky machine

There's only collectors would pay top money for this sort of thing, and has been mentioned, someone fell off it so bad that it needed a new frame. With a non standard paint job and exhaust (original too expensive?) he's gonna be very lucky to get someone buy it at that:

For sale: Classic Bike, been smashed up, bodged up with non standard repairs, history is a bit iffy, wanting top money for it, no offers 8k, advertised elsewhere in case I find some mug I can offload it onto. Low mileage, but that's cause it sat rusting to the floor in a shed for years before I thought I'd lob it on ebay for someone to buy sight unseen.

Well I don't know what is and isn't a Classic bike really, I know what I like and woun't ride one of them if i was given it free ! yuk

As for 8K, think even if I had 8K (struggling to afford tax atm never mind 8K bike !!!) I doubt I would spend 8K on any bike.

Will be interested to see what it goes for, guess we will be all watching it now so he'll think we're all ready to bid in the last seconds !

It's got history and reputation, and to me, that's it. For the same money i can have a fun bike, a winter hack, and a car and insure all three.

If you have the money, then the nostalgia and the knowledge that your bike was handcrafted by engineers will be priceless and as a consequence, the bikes are also expensive.

Would a ford GT40 be worth as much if it never won LeMans and hundreds were produced? i doubt it...

A classic bike, in my eye - something that defined an era, moved the game on, or stood out from all the other bikes of the time for one reason or the other. From the top of my head (other than those mentioned previously): Honda CBX1000s, RD250LCs, CB400/4s, Manx Nortons, Ducati 916s....bikes that seem to appear frequently in 'The best 100 bikes of all time' compliations.

The RC30 if definately in there and the price for good, standard, non-raced examples will continue to appreciate.

There are also modern day classics which will soon see similar (although time will see iif as much) appreciation in the coming years: 1992 Fireblades ( Wink) , 1998 Yamaha R1s, Mv Augusta F4s......yet 'everyday' bikes (the continual development of the 600 class for example), will disappear in years to come - they become yesterday's news as soon as the next edition (with marginal 'improvements over the previous installment) is released. Hence why most 'regular' sportsbike's value plummets within the first few years.

Also, concerning the bike's 'performance' in relation to modern day tackle: previous racing champions. Rossi is obviously top dog at the moment, probably the best racer ever, but what of his predessors - Doohan, Lawson, Agostini, Hailwood - absolutely amazing in their day and can still be remembered/appreciated for what they all those years ago.

(of course, I'm not biased towards the RC30 in any way, hoping to one day be able to own such Japanese exotica)
