Hi

Many of you might have seen the stunt video of the guy who's deaf being filmed by his mate on another superbike. The deaf guy is doing a standy up wheelie with his right leg crossed over... When he puts the bike down his front wheel is obviously not in line with the direction of the bike, hence a bloody big wobble starts. The bike wobbles out of control and he slams into the one car on the stretch of road.

I'm getting somewhere with this.

Just a few hours ago, on my way back from work, I crashed. My RVF400 is waiting for a new clutch, so I've borrowed my mum's piaggio scooter. I was being a dickhead (and got rightly punished) and the front wheel must have come off the ground or something, as the handlebars started to shake and the next thing I find is gravel in my face.

Now, my question. Does anyone know the best way to stop this from happening? I think I can remember trying to wrestle the handlebars from vibrating from left to right lock, and it obviously didn't work. Would braking hard on the back help? Or leaning? The answer is probably just jump off the damned thing. I'm left here feeling rather stupid as my bloody left leg throbs and dribbles.

Other question: why is my leg bleeding when my trousers have no graze or holes in them? Answer that!

You need to hold the throttle on and pray, and avoid braking.

Either that or try and wrestle it to the ground on the low side.

Because your trousers themselves have gripped the road and grazed your skin.

Learn to ride? Sorry, I think you'll find riding sports bike for 3 years then to jump on a ped seems slightly different!

What you're talking about is a 'tank slapper' or similar, I expect - do a search on here and there's plenty of threads.

They can be caused by many things, including a badly setup bike - again, details in other threads.

Most times they aren't initiated from a wheelie.

Braking or trying to force the bars will make it worse.
Gradually getting on the power and holding the bars loosely is what to do.

You've not had a tank slapper in 3 years of riding a sports bike?

you've been riding for 3 years and you don't know how to deal with a tank slapper?

I've not been riding that long, but I know what they are, and how to deal with them althogh (thankfully) I've never had to deal with a proper one.

Well as I say I've been quite lucky I would say on my bike. But the first time I get on this bloody moped it throws me off! I know what a tank slapper is (didn't know it applied to peds). I think I've worked out what it was - I must have leant too far over turning a corner and bottomed out, I pulled on the handlebars and they jiggled and threw me off. That's my only explaination. Hopefully my clutch springs will come today so I can get back to it!

Are you sure Luke? Count to 20 its quite a long time for the bars to shake without you crashing. Thumbs Up Mr. Green
