On week 1, day 5 of quitting smoking with my girlfriend and we aren't using any patches. Would you give an alcoholic more alcohol?

It isn't as hard as everybody seems to make out. If you want to quit, you will. I barely think about smoking and when I do get a craving I just think of something else. Smile

I went cold turkey back in November 2005.

For me the first 3 months were fairly hard, but only for the feeling of the smoke inhalation and the feel of it in the hand, especially down the pub.
I used to sit there and look in the ash tray, thinking about that shit on my lungs and the horrid smell helped me out a lot, nothing now could make me smoke a fag.
My advice is, every time you’d like a fag, think of it as disgusting in everyway possible, you know fully well it is damaging so think of everyone else as stupid and don’t give in.
The feeling of achievement later makes sense.

Good luck, it aint that hard. Wink Thumbs Up

I think people rely on the patches and medication too much. There is too much focus on 'therapy' and not enough on the simple but painfully hard task of just NOT SMOKING.

I gave up 2 years ago in September (7th). I used the gum for a few days but wanted to get off that very quickly.

The thing that worked for me was an absolute belief that I wouldn't be smoking again. No discussions, no 'trying'. It then makes it simply a case of dealing with the cravings.

It helps to build up a sense of disgust at smoking and what it has been doing to you.

I still have recently fancied a ciggy when sitting in the sun in a beer garden but I just remember the grief I went through to give up and that slight fancy for a ciggy is nothing compared to the cravings and depression of being addicted to spending a lot of money on something that is slowly killing you and stinks.

I agree.
You have to want to give up 100% from the start else you'll sadly fail even using patches, lozengers, gum etc.
I stopped once by the "cold turkey" method. It was hell, not an enjoyable experience at all. I lasted 3 years and went back to it. I thought I could trust myself with just a puff but that wasn't the case.
I haven't had a smoke at all this year. I was determined to give up once and for all but opted to use the patches. Quite frankly they made it an awful lot easier for me to stop than if I hadn't used them. I know this time that I'll never never go back to being a smoker.

I gave up by using jaffa cakes instead of ciggys. Wish my GF would give up, it drives me mad.

My GF still smokes but uses the excuse that she only smokes 'occasionally'. She always used to smoke when we went out but not during the day. In truth she still smokes at least 3 a day.

She was partly the reason I gave up. Her little brother asked her in a birthday card to stop after thier dad died(not from smoking though). I heard the whole sob story and thought this is probably the time to just do it, but she didn't have the will power to stick to it despite that.
To be honest it really p!sses me off.
Guess who's the bad guy if I get noticeably annoyed with her. Yup, it's the angry ex smoker.
I'll give her another 6 months and then I'll give her up like I did ciggarettes. ....

go visit a cancer ward,

or do it for money , unless you buy hooky no tax ciggies ciggies cost a fortune , that £5.50 a pack a day ends up being £38.5 a week which ends up as nigh 1.5K.

i dont chew gun, wreaks the teeth. usually by removed fillings.

got a doc appointment for the patches on friday. cant just give them out aparently have to check stuff out first.

i really hope i dont crack up and get into bad moods or even worse my mum annoys me so much i want a feg.

all helpful advice but suppose differant things work for differant people.

will give it a go and see how i progress anyway. hope i dont end up in tears like i did when i gave up for 1 day again. bf kepping me going on this cause he feels great after giving up and he was a heavier smoker than me, and i do not want him feeling ill when i light up or sick of the smell of me. makes me feel bad when i light up that. plus most importanly i dont want to die soon. cause i so have an inhaler stuck to my head everyday.

Is that the most twattish remark I've ever seen in my life?

Would you say the same to everybody who was out lying on the beach in the hot sun burning their skin, increasing their chances of developing skin cancer?

Would you advise someone against motorcycling by telling them to visit an A+E ward one weekend in the summer?

That's abhorrant and insensitive. This is a thread about quitting, we know why we have to quit we don't need those twattish remarks.

Thanks.

How can all the docs be closed for a week?

Either way you have to quit for a day before you start the patches, otherwise you get too much nicotine or something like that.

I quit for a week in February, then dropped a bed on my toe while I was in cyprus. It hurt lots, so I couldn't sleep and I was sitting there feeling sorry for myself and the other halfs ciggies were on the table and now I'm a smoker again! Weak bastard.

I too need to quit, but for the week I was off the ciggies, I found myself thinking about them all the time. I keep saying tomorrow I'll quit, but then I have that first one and so I'm still a smoker. I've got to do it. In my mind I'm disgusted at how weak a person I am to be held by the cigarettes. I quit puff using that frame of mind so maybe I've just had my last cigarette.

Make the one you just had your last. See how strong you are as a person. I'll post back here should I fail and light up another.

We'll see who lasts the longest. I'm a male so should be stronger than you. Prove me wrong!! (Before the flames come, I only said that as incentive.

Why don't you try avision therapy.

I have a friend who smoked since she was 12. One day she decided to quite. She smoked 20 Superking Blacks, one after the other until she finished the full 20, even though she was dying after the 4th.

After that, she couldn't even stand the smell of smoke without feeling slightly ill.

I stopped smoking spliffs about 3 weeks back.
No more tobacco for me.

You do miss the peculiar sensation of the unfiltered tobbaco smoke ripping your lungs apart, its vey satisfying. Just got to ignore it, which is hardest when drunk.

However all my weed now lasts long & gets me far more stoned.
+ Tobacco now gives me a headache & really makes me feel like shit.

Vapourizers ftw!!!
