Why? One of the main reasons why people do their full bike test is to be able to legally ride a machine with a greater capacity than 125cc.

Yes you can ride a bike bigger than a 125cc if you've passed your test.

However if you go down the standard A route, it means the bike has to be restricted to 33bhp.

You can ride any capacity bike after passing your restricted test; including a 5litre boss hoss if you wanted.

However it must be restricted to 33hp. Kits can be got for most common bikes.

Then the only thing you need to worry about is power. You can have any capacity bike, but it must be less than 33bhp during your 2 year restriction. I passed my A2 when I was 19, and was able to ride a 350cc, and then a 500cc. I could have ridden an R1 if I wanted, just so long as it was restricted to 33bhp.

lol!!
Very Happy

indeed but ive heard that people who have bought high powered bikes and had them derestricted...they suck in performance, no point, petrol costs etc +

its probably the highest of insurance groups and when youve just started with 0 no claims bonus things get a little expensive. the rs and mito were specifically designed to be learner legal

A restricted bigger bike may have better fuel consumption and cheaper insurance as well as being cheaper to buy and more reliable.
Engine performance of a restricted bike is usually a bit better than a stock 2 stroke 125.

They are also infinitely more stable, relyable, comfortable, powerfull e.t.c.

There are loads of 250cc biks out if you look, these are almost all 33bhp allready zzr250 for example..

Closer to 33bhp standard the less trouble your likely to have (a litre fazer will run like utter shit, maybe not even at all, but a cb500 will be only slightly noticable) most difference is in the top end speed..

Best ask people who actually have had these bikes not what their mates, mates, uncles, grandmas, friend told them Wink

but is it good to just jump into big bikes after just passing, lighter bikes would be a good start, i.e. build up confidence

I would say a bigger bike, while heavier, is generally easier to manage than the quite unstable RS125 or mito.

There are plenty of reasons to own a 125 2 stroke, it's just that you don't really seem to have any of them.

What g said, bigger bikes are far easyer to ride generally, stability is one big thing, generally more predicable handleing, and not just that better road presence, cars drivers dont take the pish like they do if they see a 125

Have a look at some 400's maybe, even 400singles like offroad things, use your imagination, go and hav a sit on a few in the dealerships and see what you like the feel of best Thumbs Up

You dont need to buy a kit to restrict a bike.

some DIY methods.

araldite a bit of platistic to your carb tops o prevent the slide from raising all the way. (on CV carbs)

fabricate a stop in your throttle grip to prevent the throttle being opened fully)

big metal washers between exhaust and engine with smaller internal diameter.

Don't have to buy a kit to restrict, but have to if you legally want to ride the machine

As for 33bhp restriction, i have a CBF500 restriced and it goes fine. Insurance is about 750 TPFT and im only 17. It only feels slow when im out with my dad, he has a ZZR1200 though.

Get a bigger bike. You get more for your money and you'll get fed up of 125 pretty quick i reckon.

No you don't. There is no official form at all to say that a bike is restricted, and no form has any legal meaning.

All the best

ive got a 99 cb 500

restricted to 33bhp it only gets to 90 which will be slower then a full power 125 (due to the extra w8) but it will sit there with ease which is was i wanted, altho the restrictors are coming out coz i want abit more power so that i can make safer over-takes.

i pay 620 quid fully comp with breakdown cover from benetts and im 17 with 1 years no claims from the ped.

Other people's restricted 500s have hit an indicated 100 to 105 I believe. Might be that your fueling isn't set up right for it or something (or you just need to duck down more Smile ).
