As the titles state, which would be safer to ride. Both restricted. Just to be used to get around, not for racing or anything.

Cheers

Ehh, just get what will make you happy. I don't think it would make enough of a difference to warrant basing your decision on.

I would say scooters, simply because they are generally slower and easier to ride.

I've never liked the idea of scooters, I always get the idea they'd slip over much more easily, if that's true or not, I don't know.

scooters , probably because there is survival space in the step thru design rather than engine tank and bars which can go crush your legs,

but then on a scooter other road users will bully you , on a sports they still will but not to such an extent or may mistake your bike for a bigger one.

but then again scooters have no gears so you can focus on other things rather than the gears , so your situational awareness is greater.

but also then again , bigger wheels have benefits of better cornering and stability,

Get a '98 R1 and you will be the Queen of the road (the R1 is the king Wink).

On a more serious note, I think scooters would be good to get used to the road, and what to do/not to do.

And general awareness!

Buttttt....

Having a geared 50 would mean you could get used to the gears and not have to worry about fumbling about when/if you get a bigger bike.

The majority of safety is in the rider.

Personally I'd say get a 'real' bike because I generally dislike scooters, though I appreciate some prefer them.

If you're a safe rider, you'll be on whatever bike you ride, if not, then not.

If youve never rode a bike before - get a scooter and work your way up . I generally find the scooter safer because of the afformentioned reasons - they're so easy to throw about , if you do come off it generally goes the opposite way to you too.

and they're easier to maintain & repair yourself

Personal preference really, i started with a 50cc scooter, and it got me around and about just fine, only come off once in a year, and that was me being daft riding the in the snow and ice. Embarassed

Although to an extent i am sort of sorry that i didn't get a geared 50, because it would have saved a lot of time trying to get used to the back brake being on the right foot, clutch being left hand etc etc.

Both are as safe as each other really, depending how much of a safe rider you are. Smile

Neither of them are safe on u.k main roads unless they are de-restricted and or full power. Forget the law, if you have a 50cc bike or scooter that is limited to 30mph, i would re-restrict it as, this speed is too slow for anything above town centre work, and is IMO dangerous on any busy road, as you cannot keep up with the flow of traffic, and this may cause you to feel tempted or compelled to ride in the gutter instead of dominating your lane, which is the only safe way to ride a motorcycle.

it realli depends on wat ur after when ur older Smile like i made the mistake of buyin a 50cc scooter then a year later wantin to ride bikes so its hard for me to get used to the bike after a years worth of scooterin due to the back brake being right foot ect and cluch ect. so if u want a bike when ur older then get a 50 bike so it saves u time Very Happy
