i have just been the victim of fraud from my bank account. £370 was taken out of my account and not by me and was used on an online poker room. the bank says that they will investigate and refund the money

what im not sure about is whether to close that account and open a new one in another bank/building society. They have cancelled my card and are sending me a new one out with a different number but would you guys close the account completley, move to a new bank or stay with this one ?

If the bank is aware of it there's no need to change. Let them sort it.

it's hard to change a bank account.

you need 6 months of in the black bank statements for starters.

plus a ton of identification papers due to the money laundering act thing ,if they know about it it will probably just blow over it could have happened a ton of ways which are vulnerable to other banks too.

As a little side note, UK banks used a cheaper version of the chip and PIN system (alledged to be 15p cheaper) which isn't actually as strongly encrypted as the European version.

That said chip and pin is not infallible , crims just watch you bang in the number and pick pocket you outside the shop.

they don't need to steal your card just know the numbers on the front and back (where you sign) , to use it as a user not present transaction (ie most net transactions).

I had the same thing happen to me. Dont bother changing your account. It's the card details that need changing. https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=74587&highlight=busters

lee, I work for a bank where I identify account fraud and hijacking. I can only suggest that you dont close up etc, since if you do the bank will think you're lying to them and will end up charging you for lost money.

Just let them do their shit and keep telling them you're innocent.

If you find that you're getting caught out more than once, you can ask to have your details loaded onto CIFAS, which has its good and bad points. Firstly, it means that any form of credit you apply for, you will always always either get referred for manual underwriting, or just a straightforward decline (like you may do normally).

This helps you since any fraudulent bastard wont be able to answer the questions the underwriter may ask you at the time of application.

The downside is that every time you apply for something it'll take a while since you have to wait for some monkey in a call centre to say yay or nay....

send me a pm if you want more info or have questions.
