that was fun
joined the dual carriage way at my usual slip, and followed some 4cyl sprot bike with twin undertail exhausts (not sure what it was)
followed him for a while, he was filtering 'moderately aggressivley' (but not that bad compared to what I have done on that road ) and I kept up no problem, nice and comfy <fx turbine noise>Wooo....</fx>
he kept checking his mirrors, didn't make it easy for me to get past, and was obviously rather miffed that this lardy tourer with panniers was keeping up.
came to my exit slip, we both turned off, and on the 2mile long straight bit, before we reach town, he nailed it. Arse up, head down proper 'WWwwwwaaaaaaa.....'
so I nailed it too <fx little more turbine noise> Wwwooooo</fx> and he didn't even out accelerate me, and I'm still sat there, all comfy in my pocket of still air, sat nice and upright, listening to radio 2.
stayed with him all the way up to 140, when we ran out of NSL, and entered the town. (just as well, the FJR revs out at not-much-faster. Really needs a 6th gear! )
then he cocked up at filtering and couldn't see round the bend cos he was too close to a truck. Proper road positioing meant I could see for about a mile, so popped out, and blatted past the stationary traffic.
just thought I'd share that.
you don't have to have a sprot bike to ride like a total cock!
I love my FJR..

The old rule still stands, 90% rider, 10% bike. I once borrowed my mates RS250 for a day when my Blackbird battery died (I dare anyone to find two less similar bike ridden back to back) and kept up with a gsxr6 down my usual commute route. I also rode round the outside of an R6 on my wife's SV650 with my knee on the deck.
I've also been soundly whipped on a trackday by an FJ1200 (with ohlins all round and decent rubber), I was on my Blade
A bloke from my bike club was doing a trackday round Donnington on a Blade, he was going as fast as he dared round the Melbourne loop when Jamie Robinson (yes, THE Jamie Robinson) rode round the outside of him on a GPz500, bouncing up and down to grind the centre stand away. He out accelerated him up to the start finish straight bend, where JR promptly outbraked him by 50 yards and buggered off, never to be seen again
Cheers

I fancied an FJ1300 but the seat was too low and the price was a lot too high - not many about and they hold value it seems. The electric screen made my eyes go wide in wonder, and I imagined myself sat up wafting along... till I saw the price tag on the front of the screen, and heard an audible 'pop' as my bubble was burst!
With a big lardy bike like that the hp/weight ratio compares unfavourably to smaller sports bikes (which I assume you were chasing) but the 92.5lb ft might more than make up for it
Heh, 'seat too low' - my list of mods to the Thunderace (done or still to do) includes shorter dog bones to raise the seat! Got some, just need time to put 'em on. |

Me and a mate ride similar sprot bikes; me a 750, him a thou.
I could talk all day about how he's only quicker because of the extra capacity and power.
But it would all be bullshit.
The reason he's much much quicker than me is because he's a much better rider.
The bastard.

As a small addition,
I embarrased a 2005 R1 this morning. He was rather shocked when I cracked open the throttle at 80 and still had a load to go!
He wouldn't filter as fast as me either... ____________________ British beauty: Triumph Street Triple R; Loony stroker: KR1S; Track fun: GSXR750 L1; Commuter Missile: GSX-S1000F; Cheap project: CBR900RR FireBlade

define "win" tho...
I want to get from home, to work, with as little fuss, as much comfort and as quickly as possible. A sports bike might get me into the office, oohh what, 1 minute earlier? But I'll be more relaxed and comfy on the FJR, and I can forego that minute in exchange for the effortless ride so in that respect, ie not out and out speed, the FJR "wins"

Ok in this instance win = time.
It's horses for courses as to what people want from a bike. I suppose I contradicted myself on the point I was trying to make really by tacking the Bike mag thing on the end.
I was actually saying to Marjay's point that it mostly comes down to rider. I know that I have a point that I won't cross any more, that I regularly see others still doing so. It doesn't mean they are a faster or better rider than me, I would actually say the opposite, but I won't go there, I don't need it that badly. |
