ok i havnt logged onto my yahoo email account for ages but i got a shock when i found that they have deleted everything in it.

Theres stuff in their i didnt want to lose, including contact details for a few people. I dont have their details stored elsewhere.

Arguably I might not have got in touch with them again anyway, but Im miffed that i cant now even if i wanted to.

i dont like this sort of thing.

apparently my crime was not logging on for 4 months which doesnt seem much to me.

i think at the very least they shd warn you that they deactivate accounts and delete them after just 4 months

i cant really remember what i had on there that was useful but im sure there was more stuff on there than i can remember.

now i have to try to sort out my digiguide account which is fucked up as a result (online tv guide thing)

i think its a new thing, cos im sure i have left it for 4 months before

i might even start using non web based email if i might have this problem again with another provider

but i really cant be arsed to set up thunderwotsit or outlook as i wdnt know how to do it, id probably have to contact telewest too

maybe life wd be simpler without the fiddly bits

although im not about to go off and live in the woods and trap squirrels

Yahoo exists to make a profit. They do this by either a) selling you stuff or b) selling ad space to others who want to sell you stuff. The free email account is the hook for a) and b) so if you ain't buying, they ain't interested.

They're useful for throw-away accounts and that's about it. If I ever get anything sent there that I want to keep, I forward to my own mail server which gets backed up to tape.

So, set up your own domain with Dyndns, run your own mail server and never lose any more mail...
