Caberg V2: Anyone got one?

Hi there,

I am vaguely toying with the idea of buying a new crash helmet. I currently have a lovely Shoei Z-one lid, which is scratched and scuffed to hell. It has had near daily use with anything from commuting to trackdays and has served me well. However I have not had it a great deal longer than a year and so I am wondering if it is worth spending as much again on a Shoei or even an Arai if they aren't going to last that long. Additionally I am finding that I have less disposable income than I had when I lived with my folks! (when I bought the Shoei).

I have been looking at the cheaper lids ( < £150) and the Caberg V2 has caught my eye due to the internal dark visor. I like the idea that you can have a dark visor legally - it almost feels like cheating!

I also think that in matt black the Caberg V2 has a rather nice look to it... (slightly reminiscent of airwolf... Embarassed

)

I don't like the Justissimo, not only because I dislike flip front lids, but also because the two huge side pods really ruin pheripheral vision.

So What I would like to know is:

If you own a Caberg V2...

How do you find the quality of the lid in general? Does it chip easily? Has the finish lasted?

How do you find the internal dark visor? Does it affect your vision (the lower edge being in your field of view)? Do you find it useful?

How do you find the rest of the lid? Do you have good pheripheral vision? Are the vents useful?

All experiences with this lid appreciated! Thumbs Up

Main thing I am amused by is a certain person saying "OMFG They take loads of padding out to fit that mechanism in!! Shocked

Well All I can say to that is, the BSi and ECE2205 do puncture and deceleration tests on the crown, and the side of the lid and so if its so dangerous... how did it pass?

I'm definately warming to this lid...

Jack, you say in your review that air blows up into your eyes. What about if you were wearing a necktube? I find a necktube stops a hell of a lot of wind noise, and uncomfortable turbulence. I found my bike and lid very noisy today without my Buff!! Smile

Wearing a necktube might help stop the air with is sucked up through the chin area but it won't stop the wind noise.

I am genuinely worried about damaging my hearing because of it. I guess i'll get some earplugs but i shouldn't have to.

The finish seems fine but then i treat my healmets with kid gloves. The padding seems ok but it does compress a lot. What is tight as hell in the shop will be slightly too loose in 3 months. There is no padding at all in the chinbar/mouth area.

Dark visor is occasionally useful but i wouldn't be devastated if it wasn't there. It doesn't restrict vision in the way you suggest but it does make everything darker so reduces visibility that way. It's not like limo glass where it looks black from one side but plain as daylight from the other.

Vents don't seem to do much and the peripheral vision is so so. I have no right hand mirror on my bike at the mo so when riding on motorways i have to rely totally on shoulder checks. It is quite aerodynamic when facing forwards but turn your head at speed and it nearly pulls your head off.

To sum it up, i can live with this one for now but i wouldn't buy another one.

my missus has one and she seems to like the internal visor but says the helmet is now becoming loose on her and it is getting noiser and noiser.

The wind noise really is dreadful, i'd reccomend ear plugs for every time you ride, or else your hearing will take one hell of a beating.

As for the wind kicking up into the eyes, it isn't that bad, but it's just irritating, like those little plasticky things that hold tags to shirts, and a little bit stays attached to the label. It's that kind of irritating.

I'm not sure whether it leaks through the lower edge of the visor, because there is a small gap in the seal at the front, or whether it is kicked up by the chin piece. If i can bodge my bike back together today, i'll try a few solutions on the helmet and see what part is responsible.

I usually wear earplugs on long rides anyway. I don't think wind noise will be that much of an issue. I've had a number of lids now and none of them was unbearable for commuting.

I've had my V2 about 18 months, it is still in decent condition. I don't personally have a problem with wind blowing into my eyes and as I wear earplugs the wind noise isn't a problem. I think it is a good value lid for the price. Thumbs Up

The wife and I have a V2 each. hers is nice and shiny in blue and mine is in matt black.

The dark visor is handy for when the sun is just in the wrong place. easy to use good to get it up and out the way for entering tunnels and things.

They can be a bit noisy at full chat.
The wife was knocked off her bike and banged her head on the road. The v2 was fine just a few scratches and that was all. With mine its paint is coming off but its black under the matt black paint to not much of a problem.

With all said and done for what I paid for them i think its good value.

My OH has got one, he likes the pull down internal visor feature, but always complains about the noise.

The finish very quickly looses its nice matt appearence and goes sort of dull but shiny polished by the air. I know this because I had a matt black justissimo.

I would not bother with a caberg V2 for £100 I got a HJC ac/11 which is a far quieter better lid.

I've got a V2 (non flip one) and the internal visor is great. Having to wear glasses it's a bit of a faff if I have to take a pair of sunglasses/tinted visor around with me. The darkened visor is down most of the time in mine, I don't know I just prefer it that way.

The wind noise is a bit much, but not as bad as some of the cheap FM things I used to use.

I use ear plugs and still have my hearing at the end of my 30mile commute (I kknow 60miles/day is a killer), so it can't be that bad.

As above, the quality seems ok, I find the dark visor very useful, and after a year its still going strong, doesnt seem to compressing the padding so far. I was annoyed by the air blowing into my eyes, but I fitted a Respro Foggy mask and that fixed it - as long as you get it to seal around the nose. Just wear earplugs for every journey.

Noise was never an issue with mine, as others have said though, the matt black finish does come off, normally with a stone chip or somthing and then the matt coating on it starts to peel off. No real damage to the helmet, just annoying.

I got a V2 after a J1+ and i found it to be a hell of a lot lighter, with a lot better vision.

Never even found mine that noisey!

I had a look in the shop today and they don't really have a size that fits. The Small (my usual size) is too small and I can feel I can't get my head into the crown of the lid.

The medium is an OK fit if a little loose, but if the padding compresses at all, then it won't fit.

Maybe I should stick to Shoei! Smile

The Justissimo is fantastic for me.

But the FJR electric windscreen deflects nearly all the air, thus eliminating any noise issues. Hence its the best helmet ever, for my situation.

+ I like riding about witht eh flip front up and the black visor down.
