Yeah! Very Happy
The other day i was really bored so i decided to get out my nitro r/c car that i had a few years ago. I built it from a box full of parts, used it a dozen times, put it in the box and it never got used for years......until yesterday.

I got it out the box and it was a bit dusty so i gave it a good wipe down, then i took off the air filter and gave it a good clean. Next i took off the fuel lines and flushed them through to clear out any blockages and then i washed out the petrol tank to get out the gunge that had been sitting in the bottom for years.

To my amazement it started up after a few pulls of the starter, but it was running like a dog and kept cutting out. I've spent all of today with my dad tuning the carburetor. It was a right bastard to set up. The carb was either open way too much and the car wouldn't idle, just wanted to go by itself, or it just wouldn't start because there was no air getting in. Evil or Very Mad

We finally found the right balance and all was well. We went up to the local park to race it round the smooooooth car park they have and it kept spitting un-burnt fuel out of the exhaust (running too rich) so we adjusted the needle till it was right. Very Happy

Once i'd run a tank of fuel through it, the engine had warmed up and the car was running ace! Had enough power to do donuts, which impressed a few on-lookers Cool We used up the last bit of fuel we had left and went home.

Now i need to buy another tub of nitro fuel which costs a tenner Neutral
Oh well, its good fun! Thumbs Up

I'm quite into these things. I have a 1/8th buggy that I race, currently in pieces due to a shattered rear diff case, a petrol 1/4 scale venturi car that cost £1500 new and has won the British national championships twice, a carbon fibre 1/28th 4wd touring car at 4 inches long, a full functioning 35 mph nitro truck that is 7 inches long and two other small electric trucks. There are others but I can't remember them all.

In the pics there are the buggy (2 footish), the x-ray nitro truck (7 incheish) and the teeny tiny 4 inch x-mod car.

The setup problems you are experiencing are due to the extreme amount of time you have left it. Nitro fuel has the rather undesirable effect of eating at the motors innards, changing compression and causing blow by and piston slap. Also try to make sure that you use the same fuel it was run in on, some motors need the head shimming if they are running on more potent fuel (higher nitro rating, most run on 16%, the racing buggy produces 2.6 horsepower and requires 25%+).

Looks good guys Thumbs Up

Would it be worth me getting any 'performance parts' such as a heatsink head and a new air filter?
