Handed my notice in at work recently which I am extremely happy about. Have a new job lined up for more money and more holiday. My boss took me into the office 2 hours before finish on Friday and told me it wasn't working out and that I was on garden leave for the rest of my notice. She made me clear my desk out then and there and give her they keys. After the initial shock and the feeling like I was being fired I felt quite happy.

Quick question though, is there anyway my company can try to mess me around and not pay me? Has anyone else got garden leave before and if so why? Ta

I'd get it writing that they do not want you to attend work, but they will still pay you for the time that you would be working. Otherwise they could kick off and say you never showed up. Any discussions should be confirmed in writing and dated/signed by your manager.

Don't worry it's very common. They are protecting themselves more than getting at you. I don't know your job but I'd expect you could mess up computer systems, pinch things, be shitty with clients etc etc.
And anyway in this weather I'd thank 'em. Very Happy

Yes, they are protecting themselves.

I didn't get garden leave as such, but I was made redundant, told them I'd got a new job and needed to start in a month (I was on a 2 month notice contract) and they said ok, you can leave when you need to and we will pay you two months wages, as well as redundancy money. Very Happy

Sometimes it seems too good to be true but it would be more hassle for them if you were to stay and f**k them over.

Having said that, I would personally get them to put it in writing like LH-ER5 said, that way you arse is covered.

Then, sit back and enjoy being paid for relaxing. Thumbs Up

Hah easy life! Companies have this thing which doesnt allow them to mess you around - no win no fee.

Garden leave is just another term for "we dont like the fact you've decided to quit, so we're going to piss you off by not letting you say goodbye to your work mates"

Or in other words, extra paid holiday.

Very Happy

Happy days!

Cool!
Take it as an extra holiday...and get out into the garden, its been a fabulous summer so far!

I wouldnt dwell on it, especially as you have another job to go to, enjoy this time.

If I remember correctly you were working as a recruitment consultant?

When I left my job in recruitment I worked out my notice but was banned from answering the phones and not allowed to have any client of candidate contact.
I think it's a way of protecting themselves from you stealing their clients/candidates or information.

Thumbs Up Sounds like you've got a nice little unexpected holiday ahead of you
Never heard it called "garden leave" though Confused

It's very common in the industry I work in. Nothing to worry about!

Just enjoy getting paid for doing what you want at home! Cool! Cool

I'd like my place to give me it when I hand my notice in but I know they wont... Maybe I should threaten to sell secrets in my last couple of weeks. Laughing

Garden Leave is a pretty accepted thing these (paranoid) days...don't forget they are within there rights to call you in at any time during your garden leave so you won't be able to go off to Spain or Alaska (although with the current weather, you probably won't to Surprised

And take everyone's advice and get it in writing though...

Enjoy your time out Surprised

A.

Thank you people. Feel a little better that it might not entirely be my fault.

Didn't quite sink in that I had garden leave until monday morning Smile Have been waking up at 7.30 each morning with a horrible feeling like I have to be somewhere, then I remember and it's such a great feeling.

Am planning to do a little work on the side but mostly will be visiting my family in various parts of the country. This has come at a great time as I am getting married on the 1st Sept so need plenty of time to sort things and destress.
