Why do I have to order every bit...

Bear with me, just having a bit of a winge.

Fitting a replacement caliper last night (2nd hand - £80 vs £400 new). Tried using the old washers from the banjo bolts. Came to check this morning and I could feel fluid from beneath the joint Rolling Eyes

Decided to get new washers and redo the job tonight.

So phoned the nearest Honda dealer (15 miles away Mad

). I had to tell the guy over the phone what fiche to look at and checked the part number with him. Here's my gripe - I was told not a stock item, they'll have to order them. Good news is next day delivery but I have to collect.

Now it's only a little washer, why not have them in stock? Honda do recommend replacing with new if you unbolt the brake lines. So either the Honda dealer doesn't do that when required or any work takes two days while they order parts Mad

. I'm sure there are other examples of bits that should really be kept in stock.

Ok, I know I could maybe have got away with some simple copper washers that are non Honda sourced. However, excuse my ignorance, but I'm not sure where these might be had locally. I should really get out more. In my defence it's a Honda, I need new bits every blue moon Wink

Anyone else have any stories of dealers and/or ordering parts?

It's probably because it is just a washer, you can most likely get them from anywhere.

I phoned up everywhere I could looking for a rear axle nut. Nobody did the right one, only Yamaha. And they wanted £13 for it, and they would have to order it in which would be 3 days. Evil or Very Mad

To hell with that, I just got the old one fixed.

I would much prefer to deal with a small shop than with a big manufacturer for things like this. I used a shop called Harry Parkes Motor Spares to get a torque wrench; he was the only place within 20 miles that sold them. I went in, he phoned up the warehouse and asked them which was best for me, ordered it and I went. I came back 45 minutes later and it was there. If I could get that sort of service from a one man band all the time, I'd never need to visit Halfords again, I'd just pay the extra.

Is it the banjo bolt/caliper washer? if so yeh its just a normal copper washer..

Finding good bike shops is very important, loads of them seem to be dissapearing though Sad

honda dealer and halfords are the absoloute last resort tbh...

The washers are leaking because they have work hardened. Copper starts off soft and hardens as you subject it to forces, this is why they haven't deformed and sealed any gaps when you reused them.

Youy can re-use them but first you have to make the copper soft and squidgy again by a process called annealing.

It is a very simple process. Clean and degrease the washers. Heat them until they are 'cherry red' using either a blowlamp of a gas ring on your cooker. Let them cool.

They are now annealed and ready for use.

I've been trying to get copper washers. No hardware store I have tried stock them. The only place I have found is online, and I'm still waiting for a quote from them.

I couldn't get them anywhere when I needed them which I thought was stupid, what happens when you take your bike in, they order them as specials? Dealers wanted about £1 each mail order plus postage although I seem to remember than deamon tweeks did them cheaper . In the end I brought them of this bloke,

at least you can get parts for your bike. mine dont exit and everyone looks at it scratching their heads. yes have had every bike shop look at it. still needs chain and sprockets and have been given yet another promice for the bearings which should be easy to get apparently. i live in hope.
