Hi,
What is the stance on riding with the chin guard up. I've got an AGV Longway.
It is my understanding that Flip up's are tested as full face's so have to be ridden with them down. However, for city use - has anybody actually got pulled up on it. If so, was it 3 points and a fine - or just a warning? |

Sorry, i don't think i made it clear.
I mean using a full face helmet that has a flip up chin guard with the chin guard in the up position. I was told that as they are tested as full face helmets then they need to be in the down position. I tried checking the BS numbers and searching on the net, but didn't turn up much.

don't know of anyone being pulled, but flip-front lids are tested and classified as full face, so technically you're not wearing an appropriate lid when riding with the front up. TBH, I'd not want to do so anyway, but that comes down to personal evaluation of risk.
Roof boxer helmets are classified as open face, so can be riden with the chin-piece up.
Shuberth make an open-face lid, with a removeable chin 'bar' These helmets qualify and meet all Full Face lid standards, but give the feel of an openface helmet as it's only a single bar, about 1cm in diameter that runs round the front.
I think if you were pulled for riding with an open lid, and that alone, you'd be very unlucky. However, if you were pulled for something else, it might just be something they can add to the sheet.

From lessons, I seem to remember it's technically illegal to ride with the chin-piece up. That is not to mentioned it's a bad idea: if you do crash, it's a nice lever to twist your head in an odd direction, on the BMW lids at least the chin piece comes off quite easily in the up position and it's basicly strapping the weight of a full helmet to your head for the protection a jet helmet would provide.
In practice, I found it makes little difference to just putting the visor up unless you're going very slowly - I had to put up the chin-guard on my lid during u-turn practice because my glasses would steam up otherwise during a particularly hot day a few months back.
Last, but not least, you look like a muppet with the thing up ____________________ CG125 (stolen->recovered!) || Wars do not decide who's right, only who's left. |
