If you are looking to sell your bike, as I am (see sig </end plug>), then watch out for these chappies, they are so obviously scammers. I know it's been well documented on here that scammers exist but I thought I would share my experiences over the past few days with a scammer.

First email I received a few days ago, as I was going to open it I was excited, and was met by this:

Scammer wrote:
Hello,
i am mark by name , Am interested in buying your for sale KAWASAKI ER-5 500cc listed for (£1,200)..Please let me know if its still for sale and the condition.I await your response to the questions and i will proceed with purchase immediately because is highly needed for a Birthday Presentation coming up at the End Of This Month 2006.So Kindly get back to me asap.Your quick response to this mail is highly needed asap okay...await your reply..
Regard
MARK.

I do believe that I wasn't born yesterday and this so obviously is a scammer. As my finger hovered over the 'Delete' button, my mind told me that I am bored and thus should probably play the turd alone for a laugh.

I replied in this way:

Me wrote:
Hi,

It is still for sale and the condition is tatty but runs well.

Cheers for your interest Mark,

Joe

Fair enough, seems I've taken the bait and hopefully he will reply in the traditional 'I am based in Nigeria and will send you cheque for £10,000 and you refund me the money.' sort of guff.

Got home today to see my inbox displaying 3 new emails, one from 'karry karry', another scammer who I told to go fall off a cliff because I can't be bothered stringing two along, and two from MARK MORRIS, who I am currently playing along with. I have received another from a 'Mr Chin Yong' which was incomplete and also a scammer. Here is the email from MARK MORRIS:

Scammers Reply wrote:
Hello howard , WHO THE FUCK IS HOWARD?
Thanks for your prompt mail.Regards to your mail responce i'm still intrested in buying it over from you. I recite Recite what? here in ireland but my shipper will inspect it when he come for the pick up after payment. And i will instruct my P.A to send you a cheque payment that will cover the shipping cost as well (£4500). AHA I KNEW IT Pls i will be counting on your trust to deduct your funds as soon as you get the cheque cleared and transfer the balance of (£3300) through western union money transfer to my shipper who will be comming for te pick up. Let me have the Name that will be written on the cheque and your residencial Address where the cheque will be send to,also with your personal phone #. However i still more packages that my shipper will be shipping along with the bike, So pls after the balance has been transfer to my shipper,he will come to your destination for the pick up and as well sign the necessary document on my behalf. Looking forward to hear from you soon. Yes, I thought you would be

Sincerely,
Morris Thought you were Mark by name?

I have highlighted my thoughts on his email in bold in the quote. How can people fall for this sort of thing?

I basically told him that I will give him my address for the cheque and can he send the cheque along with £100 good faith money in cash to prove the cheque won't bounce (What would be the legality of keeping this?) and I think I'm going to have a good time if he doesn't give it up as a bad job beforehand. Any ideas what I could do with these email addresses and what I could do to string him along further, such as the 'iBook' incident where he really did him over.

Just thought I would share this with you and a reminder to be vigilant at all times when selling your bike on the internet or otherwise.

I also told the other guy that I have traced his home address from his I.P address through the email and am sending the heavies around later on. So Siggi, if I give you cheque for £5000 will you cash it and then do the job and send me £4500 back in cash to my address in Nigeria and I will let my P.A desptch teh moneys to you from my base here in Ireland at the end of the following month of this year 2006. Thumbs Up Wink

Yeah you're right, unlucky about that. I suppose if they make it look real enough it can look convincing but emails like what I am getting are just ridiculously unbelievable. That said, I wouldn't send anything abroad without knowing the person in question.

Try to find a way to include the words "Mugu" in the name for the cheque.

That's the term they use for the people they are trying to rip off.
It will make them aware that you are up to their little ploys.

Then fuck em off out of it.

Luxy, the reason they are offering so much is because they work on the principle that your greed will get the better of you, that you agree to more than the price of the bike, then (if you ever actually get the cheque) ... they give you a dud bank draft and you won't be able to cash it.

Alternatively, if you are silly enough to give them personal details for the cheque, or account details, they'll use them to clear out your account.

Amusing tales of how people have dealt with these Nigerian scammers can be found on sites like www.scamorama.com Very Happy

Thanks alot for the mugu tip, I suppose it's alot like mugu or similar Laughing

Yeah that's how they do it, they send the '£5000' and then when you send them a real cheque for £3000 back or whatever they then have your bike and £3000 to play about with.

Cheers for the site, going to send the email now.

Thumbs Up Mr. Green

Hi,

So excited to be dealing with you, I can't wait for the cheque to arrive. I would like the £100 sent to my address though beforehand, just as a deposit as is customary in my family. I use the name 'Joe Gray' as an alias, my real name is Jonathan Mugu, nice to meet you.

Once the £100 good will fee is agreed to personal details will be released and the transaction can be completed.

Cheers,

Jon.

I like this game. It's about to get a whole lot sillier too.

You need to be a tad more subtle than just saying your surname is Mugu, the game is now over.

Even if he susses out you know about it, there's lots of amusement to be had in furthering the correspondence and seeing what it takes to snag him on some other dodgy deal.

Yep got exact same email !!! Figured it was a scam either to get the bike or as some seem to be just to confirm that it's a valid email as they can get more for verified ones.

Never unsubscribe or reply to emails that's often the point of them.

What could the scammer do with the information I have requested?

Here is my reply:

Quote:
That sounds ok, the deposit will have to be £100 in cash in an envelope please, Pounds Sterling too. I have to request this because the God I worship, Unbongo, requires a sacrifice before I can commit to any major life change. I hope you can understand my religious beliefs and come to terms with it, or my Lord Unbongo won't be able to use the money in Heaven to buy Chumbawumba CDs and he loves his Tubthumping dearly. If the sacrifice isn't made I won't be eligible to enter Heaven above when I die, which will be soon without the money.

May Unbongo and the Seven Wibbles shine down upon you and your family.

Jon.
