My toot to mean "excuse me, I'm not entirely convinced you've seen me, and I would like to alert you to my presence thanks"

translates in some road users minds as "you utter, utter bastard, I want a fight NOW! COMON THEN!!" ? Sad

Sadly it's another example of the way that the "highway code" has evolved. Take the other common examples, the fact that almost everyone seems to think having hazard lights flashing means "I can park here", or the way if a brake light is out then it's fine to just put the fog lights on, after all it means people can see you. Right?

yeh i get that. One guy pulled to the side of me and said "why the f**k did you beep your horn at me" i said "because i thought you hadnt seen me, i was knocked off 1 month ago because someone didnt see me" and with that the lights went green and he speeded off (me being on a 50 i felt quite intimidated)

You're quite right, that's certainly something I've seen a lot of, and it used to worry me a little. Following my crash, however, I've realised I don't give a flying monkey what other road users think of me. Most couldn't endanger more if they tried, so cack is their roadsense, so I'm not losing anything by riding more aggressively.

Toot away - if they are hacked off with you, at least it means they must have noticed you!

they dont kow what that sound maens i dont think apart frmo when tey make it themselves. the horn on my bike is a bit shit, i had two of them and one rattled off the crash bars so i put my tax there instead but one i have left is pretty loud still.

i have used it and i get puzzled looks frm people sitting at green lights turning round wondering why i am tooting. ok for me i can filter but they still dumb to it.

Beep twice, then wave..

They will think they know you and wave back (thinking who the feck is that) but it will stop them thinking your calling them a cnutyflapweaselfunker and by the time they realise you'll be gone!

As mentioned, a short toot or two, as opposed to a longer held down note, usually conveys a lot less agression.

My horn sounds so gay that I would rather try and shout at the other road users to tell them my intentions.

Carry your highway code book with you and slap em with it if they get pissed at ya!

Check right at the bottom of here: https://www.highwaycode.gov.uk/07.htm

Code:
92: The horn. Use only while your vehicle is moving and you need to warn other road users of your presence. Never sound your horn aggressively. You MUST NOT use your horn

    * while stationary on the road
    * when driving in a built up area between the hours of 11.30 pm and 7.00 am

except when another vehicle poses a danger.

Some people know the code and some dont but it's usualy the ones complaining
at you for beeping that are the ones that dont have a clue why you just honked it.

My advice, Beep it Razz safer than them not seeing you Karma

I used to have the wankeriest horn, so when my bloke invested in a set of those loud horns that moo-ed or made horse noises, wolf whistles, etc, we ended up putting it on my bike for a while ... but it used to distract road users Mr. Green

So I've found that lots of loud revving with a decent-sized engine makes them notice me better Thumbs Up Prolly fucks up the mechanicals a bit, but at least they hear me coming.

me! i just found out the one i have left is broken when i near ran into a parked car in the middle of a main road round a bend! that would have been an interesting pile up. Twisted Evil just roared instead, he was talking to a man walking on a pavement at same time. what a place to park! not even on the curb right in the middle of the road after a bend! there double yellow lines all the way up so i suppose the law wont do nothig cause he parked in the middle of the road and not on them! Twisted Evil Twisted Evil (breaths) sorry i had to get it out.

also heard taxi drivers tooting horns at 2.30am in my estate last night. Rolling Eyes

Thanks for the link. Will look one out and when the plastic's next off the bike will look to fit.

I had had a look at the Nautilus but since been advised these are bigger than you think and would be hard to fit under plastics.

Thumbs Up

Get yourself on ebay and buy a Ford Mondeo horn, (very easy to fit), there was a study of all car horns and it came out top, plus you can buy one for nearly nowt.
