If capirossi's done 215mph in a race, then surely it'd go a bit faster.

Say if it was geared pretty much average for its power and ridden absolutely flat out in a straight line how fast would say......the Desmosedici go?

Always wondered Smile

Probably about 215mph

Ducati probably just did it to grab the headlines.

If they set the bike up for top speed and nothing else, on an infinite length straight, I'd guess about 220mph?

Light fuel load and gearing and cams (lift) all set up exclusively for top end power, would probably get it there, if not higher.

Some interesting figures for you.

At catalunya (sp?) a few weeks ago the F1 cars were lapping 30 seconds a lap faster than the MotoGP bikes!

At one corner the bikes were clocked at 70 mph mid corner and half way down the following straight they were doing around 210.

The cars were doing 160mph through the same corner and around 200 mph down the straight!

I think winning races was more on their minds - they had a slighty disadvantage in the corners, so making the thing quick down the straights gave their riders a chance - especially considering that it was Catalunya where Capirossi won Ducati's first MotoGP race.

They tamed the engine down a little to try and make the thing a bit more rideable, so with 260odd bhp in play, I'd guestimate 220mph+. Loris was constantly faster in a straightline than Bayliss, by 5-10mph as he was smaller and could tuck his elbows in better - such so aerodynamics obviously play the biggest role in such speeds. The RCV easily has the power, but they designed the bike with a smaller frontal area to aid steering (and it shows), however, the RCV still posted speeds of 210mph+.

I've noticed that and it's quite incredible - MotoGP bikes seem to accelerate faster than F1 cars despite lesser aerodynamics, power, traction, entry and exit speeds...(the bikes have to brake some 100, 150 yards earlier)

didn't 5th gear do a stupid unfair test on this? , where they got the Honda WSB machine to complete with an F1 Honda car and a Honda powered speed boat , the bike won first time , then the f1 car twice, with the boat being pissed on each time.

Which then had Stink on here asking why not put the Honda RC211V against the F1 car , and the fact that it was an unfair test as boats are fast in water nothing else put a car in the water will it go fast? , not it'll sink.

Thats the price the cars have to pay for all that downforce.

BTW - The Honda F1 team have just set a speed record for a race legal F1 car at 400kph (248mph) on the Bonneville salt flats.

I heard that about the cars. Another mad fact was at 60mph the cars essentially double their weight with downforce. Shocked

And that at 70mph they could drive upside-down.

An F1 car will always be faster than any bike you care to choose simply becasue its got more rubber on the road.
