windy roads

ok, i am 5ft 4 and not heavy as such and my bike is def not heavy. but the wind is scarying me now i was fine on my old bike must have been heavier and also i was heavier to then.

now when i go along the front shore on my crap lifan a big gust of wind near blows me off and same on the dual carriage way. i try and aviod places with open stretches. it dont feel safe and i am sure car drivers keep there distance in windy days for that raeson to.

my dad can lift my bike ffs. but he is big and strong though but still.

anyone else get this? maybe should get a heavy bike or eat crap food and put on weight.

Buy some panniers/tank bag and put bricks in them?

Keep your arms loose, sit in the center of your lane and be ready to correct any big gust of wind. The upright sitting position probably doesnt help very much either.

was still blown road the shore front, not good when everyone double parks down there and cuts cornors cause well they think bikes are small ram them into the curb lol
took the back roads up the city today and even they where windy. i prayed for wind in the city though as the sweat was lashing off me in the bike gear. cant wait till my new jacket arrives! far lighter and sexier lol

Wind used to scare me and still does for that matter, this may help.

Try and relax, loosen the grip and hug the tank more with your legs. The more your hands twitch and fidget, the more this will be transmitted to the front wheel and the more the bike will move.

i thought i was going to get laughed at for saying that to. i do grip the tank for dear life and take it easy. just as well i can get into places i need to by taking the alternative more intersting back roads instead of will i reach my destination alove road. lol

Dealing with wind... shift your weight forward so you have more control of the steering and relax your arms.

what everybody above said , if the wind is constant you might want to counter steer slighty (feels odd) to stay in the same road position , watching out for stuff that will block the winds so you can de counter steer and recounter steer when you pass them.

thanks for the advice i willuse this alot as i travel along the sea front everyday and it is windy most the time. and the dual carriageway. still prefer back roads they dont seem aslong as i think i am more entertained by the bends than the boring carriageway.

It is possible to learn where to expect gusts of wind and prepare for them. I used to get quite nervous riding in high winds, but after many years i've gotten used to it.

By the way, you do look pretty damn hot in your avataar Dragonfly! if you think that isn't a great picture then post a good one

and also quite often you do have room around you that you can use and allow the wind to push you about a bit rather than fight it tooth and nail.
