What do Japanese folks ride?

In Japan apparently its bloody hard to get a licence to ride anything over 400cc.

In the 1980s and 1990s we had a rash of little 400 super sports the Honda HRC NC range , Kwak 400s 250 2 smokes etc, generally fantastic small powerful corner attacking machines.

My question is this what has happened to all these 400s? , ie what do Japanese folks ride today? , do they just ride identical bikes to us but with sleeves put into the cylinders to reduce the CC ? , I keep finding smaller than normal CC bikes when going to oggle bikes , like a 400cc SV or a bandit 400 Fazer 400 etc and wonder about it.

There was a program on TV about them a while ago as apart of the growning violence of teenagers in japan (going nuts from stressful life style etc), very violent group and alot of them are recruited in to the yakuza.

so they are criminals yet they ride about on some of the wierdest eye catching, ugly bikes i have ever seen? They dont sound exactly stealthy.

No longer with small 50cc engines but now up to 900cc beasts. Kinda hybrid between a goldwing and a scooter.

The retro styling is strong here currently...shame as winter is cold here so I want a fairing to tuck in behind of.


Licences...Yep, getting a licence here for anything over 400cc is near impossible unless you're prepared to fork out a grand to attend a 'driving school' then you'll pass with flying colours! Mostly the cops don't take too much notice and often don't know the bike size anyway. The most popular bikes are the sub 250cc as they don't require shaken (kind of a strict and expensive MOT) and the sub 400cc class (requires shaken but the licence is not so difficult to obtain). Riding here is always a 'how lucky do I feel' kinda syndrome since the speed limits are so ridiculously low. The regular road max. limit is 60 Km/h (No, not at mistake), and the highways are 80 km/h but no one really pays any attention to them even though the fines for speeding are relatively expensive.

The 400s work so well here as we have a lot of mountain roads, that are fairly narrow and extremely twisty - perfect for the sports 400s!

They ride alot of modified VAN VAN-esque bikes as well. VAN VANS with clipons made me laugh!

erm I think my point was missed slightly , what I was mostly asking was what happened to bikes like NC30s and all of the super hot 400s? ,

an RVF400 is probably their take on our blade, so what is their take of our 1000cc bikes bearing in mind the licence structure?

From (the very broken explanation that a japanese guy gave me), they are vented caps that allow the exhaust fumes to exit out sideways, but stop the fumes/waves exiting straight out the back of the exhaust.
This makes the sound of the exhaust alot deeper.
Try holding your hand an inch or so behind your exhaust pipe whilst its idling and you wil hear the change in tone. Doing this makes my 125 sound alot throatier

These things essentially make it louder without knackereing the engine by still allowing free gas flow (or something like that!)

The guy tried to claim it increased power and fuel economy but i doubt that very much!
