Was out a few times with a guy on a zx6r (96) and mines the 97 cat, hes a fairly compitent rider, and i like to think im not a total retard on a bike, now not trying to gain myself a bigger head here, but down lanes, down the motorway and on A roads the zx6r didnt pull away from me once, and i was two up with a fairly light rider.
Even when he ducked down and jammed the power on, i could always keep up with very little ragging.

My bikes fitted with a DB screen, its alot heavyer with an art can, his has a smoked standard with a blue flame can.

hes abit anoyed that a 2.5k bike Rolling Eyes doesnt beat a 1.6k bike, maybe hes expecting a little much from such an old bike, what do you think? are they both pretty evenly matched, or is his down on power?

bering in mind we were both doing 145 ish (private roads)

Steve.

I've sat up the arse of litre bikes when on a 600 on longish straights on track.

There's zx6s that are five years newer than his bike for less money than he paid.
I wouldn't be paying more than £1.5k for a f model zx6 personally.

However, even a brand new zx6 would only be at the most a second quicker from a standing start in a quarter mile, I would have thought.

Get up to around 100bhp on the road and there's not usually much in it - the rider makes the biggest difference - who's the most confident, who can use more of what their bike has to offer, who has the balls/stupidity to try and max out their bikes on the public highway, who can brake the latest into a set of corners, who's riding style is more suited to a type of road, who's got the better view of the road....who's the "better" rider for any given circumstance?

I'm no where near the fastest rider on the road - 600 vs 600 - not much in it, but when it came to 400 vs 600 - again, surprisingly little, welll; only on roads at sub 120mph (isn't that fast enough?)

was heading more towards the bikes performance than rider ability, id say were both of the same "skill" level when it comes to fast road riding (dont flame me for this Rolling Eyes )

what are the top speeds, bhp read-outs for the 6r? i know mine are around 90-100 if your lucky, and mine hits just over 155 indicated.

About exactly the same. Even the new bikes have only slightly more bhp and the top speed is about the same.

As you were two up I would be inclined to think there was something wrong with his bike. Not necessarily down on power but perhaps the gearing (sprockets) have been changed? I'm thinking along those lines as you talk about fast A roads and motorways. The sort of riding where lower gearing is a disadvantage.

Alternativly has he had the bike re-tuned when the can was fitted (or know if the previous owner had done so?). Sometimes just bolting on an aftermarket can cause a drop in power and most importantly torque. Meaning his dyno print out may well show more power but if the torque is down he won't accelerate anything like the original can Wink

That's kinda my point. For example, most riders, on the road, would probably be marginally quicker on a CBR600F rather than an RR, because it's 'softer', it should allow a rider to get more out of it. Even on the dyno printouts, there's not a lot in it until the final couple of thousand rpm. Most riders will use barely 75% of a 600's true potential, hence why things are somewhat even when it comes to Joe-Bloggs out for a bit of road riding.

I'd expect around the 85-95rwbhp mark for each bike, 145-155 top whack (although I think Bike tested an early ZX6R at over 160 - fastest straightline 600 for some time I believe).

Didn't notice the 'two up' bit.

Craig:
I'd say an average rider would be faster on the RR because, in my opinion, it's setup is very 'confidence inspiring'.

I fully agree there but if you look on ebay/autotrader people are asking up to 3k for an f model its ridiculous Shocked

True, but I see well-refined ergonomics and 'plush' suspension equally as confidence inspiring - maybe more so on not-so-well-surfaced roads.

The RR has a riding position that suits riding fast and makes sense for it.

The suspension on the one I rode was well set up for road use and gave you good confidence even on bumpy roads, where a bike with not so good suspension, well, wouldn't have been as good, in my opinion.

Yes, if you have rock-hard smooth-track suspension, then it might not feel so good, but while too soggy suspension might be nice for bimbling, if it does that well it's probably not going to be so good when you go faster over the same bumps.

Having ridden these bikes back to back, there could be a reaason for this.

The Thundercat has a very linear power curve, which is why I got rid cos I got bored of it, whereas the ZX6R is very peaky in comparison. If your mate rode in the top three thousand revs of the range, he would murder you, especially two up, if he is winding on at the same time as you, you probably will keep up with him, the T'Cat's better midrange being negated by your pillion.

A decent rider riding both bikes back to back would be quicker on the ZX6R if going for it but smoother on the T'Cat if ultimately slower.

Cheers

Grim

You've got very similar power, and you've got a much better midrange. As Grim said, if he'd been nailing it from 7 or 8k in every gear, it might have been more noticeable. Maybe he isn't aware of the Cat's grunty midrange?

Has he done anything to the bike that could mess with the fueling?

If he was trying and knows what he was doing, then I'd worry that there was something a tad wrong there.

i thought the same, the only thing hes done is things like indies ect, nothing to do with engine and fueling as hes not really up on bikes, altho hes owned them for years.

Now do you tell him so that he can get his bike performing the way it should and risk him pulling away from you or do you keep quiet / tell him his bike is just slower and smugly pull along side him at ever opportunity ? Very Happy Wink
