RS125 HELL!

hello all, just got the RS125 out of the garage...cost £500 in repairs and another £150 to get the engine done so the cost of this bike is about 750 now, but I hope it will run fine.

...was hoping it would run fine.

Took it up to the countryside to get used to it, kept losing power pretty suddenly, then the engine just cut out. I tried for about 5 minutes to get it started, it fired up but had no power, wouldnt hit more than 4kRPM,

pulled it over to a layby and cried. (ok I didn't cry but I wanted to!)

This is pretty upsetting and I don't know what's wrong with it; I'm hoping its something ridiculously simple but it has:
a full tank of petrol
a new spark plug
fully synthetic good oil

and it won't start. The starter motor tries, it'll occasionally get a couple of revs then die again, and when it does start there's no power whatsoever and it stalls as soon as the engine stops (pathetically) revving.

So it's now stuck in Totley (about 10 miles from where I am) in my mates aunties back garden, gonna get lugged to the garage again tomorrow

was the engine work carried out by a dealer/mechanic? if so they would be the people i'd go to, maybe they havent done something right..

Hi

Sounds like it is running out of petrol. Does it need to go onto reserve? Failing that try opening the fuel cap, and if you here a whoosh of air and / or the bike then starts then the fuel tank breather is blocked. Also worth checking the fuel pipe is not kinked and also that the fuel filter in the carb is not blocked.

And lastly if it has sat for ages then it is possible that water has got into the petrol which in small amounts has the effect you are suffering from.

it was a tank filled from empty so not out of petrol.

It's going into the garage as soon as we can get transportation :S

Hi

Fuel filters would be the first thing to check from empty. On the RS with the 28mm carb there is a banjo shaped cover on the side of the carb where the fuel hose goes on. Has a 10mm headed bolt on it. The fuel filter is a gauze disk the size of a 1p piece under there. Turn the fuel off and it is easy to get at and clean (although there may be another filter in the system that someone else has fitted).

Blocked jets? Has it been sitting doing nothing for a while? My NSR did the same while it was laid up. I would start it periodically, but it died after only a few days since the last 'run'. Cleaned up the carburettor and it fired up straight away.
