I am wondering what short courses, a year or less, there are to gain a very basic qualification as an electrician. Which is the most recognised body in this nationaly and internationaly, City & Guilds?

Edit: i realise this will not be as a fully qualified electrician.

Thanks for any help.

I think from what a friend told me that you have to study something called "Part P" and I think it was city and guilds.

I'm sure someone will be along soon with a better answer than me

Part P is the registration of works carried out on a property by an electrician with NICEIC!
As to the Qualification, It maybe be worth your while asking electrical contractors to take you on as a labourer... You'll then have the opportunity to 1) see if you like it, or 2) ask the electrician!

i did the 236 part 1 and 2 electrical installations/ maintenance, part one, is the basic course and would give you the starting knowledge base of house wiring and one /2 way switching ,but that is a year long course and part 2 is a 2 year one total 3 years , and to work on domestic properties you need part P its a legal reqirement now and if you dont have it and something dire happens then they`re insurance (or your own if you have any ) wont pay out ,but can i ask why you want a "quick" course on something that can potentially be so dangerousto both you and others around you ??

I do not wish to carry out work as an electrician or any electrical work from this qualification. I merely wish to have the qualification and the potential to do more should I want/need to.

I've got my trade papers through SEMTA (Did my apprenticeship through my old company) and an HNC in Mechatronics. Both of them combined class me as an electrician.

I cannont however wire houses or any public buildings as I do not have my 16th edition cert. That is the one you need to wire houses and shit. Although I do have my Elecrical Safety Rules (Shell specific) and my Electricity At Work Act certificate. Plus loads of other work related courses, Hill Graham switchgear , SCR controls, TDS Top Drive blah blah blah.

Did you send away to SeaDrill?? To see about the roustie jobs?

You can be a wireman with no quailfcations but the part 1 can be useful, its all down to skill and hard graffting as a wireman building panels/wireing machines up/service engineering etc pay is good when you,ve got the experance can be up to £35 per hour doing contract work.

There is no quick way to gain qualification as an electrician as far as I'm aware. I sat a course called Electrical Installation (I think) But this in itself doesn't qualify me as an electrician. It has to be combined with site experience, 3 years I think it is now.

You just need the part one and two to be fully qualified as an electrician the 3 years site experance and site diary are for the JIB gold card which you would need for house bashing, l do only industral eletrical engineering so just need to be a qualified electrician.

Not sure if it's different in Scotland as is often the case. I have never done house bashing either, I've always worked on industrial/commercial stuff and I couldn't get graded till I'd done my time. Oh yeah, and the trade test too. Thumbs Up

Shocked To be fair, the log book has changed a bit since I done it. I didn't have to go back to college to get my Approved cert either. As far as I'm aware, the boys up here who are on industrial type sites, are still doing their log books.

the most recognised qualification is through city and guilds.

basic and advanced craft qualifactions recognised the world over apparently (my plumbing and heating qualifctions score as many points as doctors, lawyers and the like on US visa applications).

the only downside is each will take 2 years to get which when combined is the full 4 year apprenticeship.

to sit part p you only need to say your an approved person (no actual criteria exsit to say what an approved person should be able to do Wink .

the course takes about a week and is supposed to be fu(king hard lots of building regs and tricky maths (not just some arithmetic but properly hard equations Shocked )

I'm not to up on this Part P stuff as it's not applicable in Scotland, but does it only apply to house bashing type work, or is it the same for industrial sites?

The part P covers house basing apart from the kitchen this is so kitcken fitters don,t have to become electrician to do there job. Rolling Eyes

Reuben, all forms of electrical work are quite physically demanding and it is a job that you really do have to work hard in so you would have to be physically able to do the work, at my collage we started the course in two classes with 30 people in each (60 total) and now at the end there is only one class with about 15-20 people left the others were ethier thick as shit or could,nt hack the job and that inculded all the girls and ethnic minorities.

Only go for it if you think you can hack the work or you will just be wasting your time, and as an apprentice you will doing all the shitty nasty jobs.

To be honest Reuben, the qualifications are not much more than useless without the hands on experience. Confused

just a thought but what do you want the qualification for?

is it to enhance a cv, so as to get a job directly related to hands on electrical installation or some other job where a knowledge of electrics is desirably?

being a fixit person ie somebody who can fix anything makes you highly useful in the work place , and can often make it very hard for employers to let you go.
