PostPosted: 15:35 - 26 Jul 2006    Post subject: Disk Locks - How Safe? Reply with quote

Ok, my partner has gone home to Greece for a month.
They have an XR8, nice looking ped. Its been stolen a few times.
Last year it got nicked twice. Because IOS is a 'party island' this time of year its full of asswipes!
My question is, how safe is a disk lock?
I have one, but didnt really look into it. What are the chances of someone getting it off the bike oppsed to a normal bulky lock?
Thank you

Pretty bloody useless, in the grand scheme of things.

Locks aren't much good unless they lock the bike *to* something else.

Disc locks might stop the casualest of casual theives, but anyone with a plan is just going to pick the whole lot up, lob it in a van and then remove the lock at their leisure.

there was a report in a mag last month with a couple of theives and they said that 9 times out of 10 if there is a disc lock on a bike they will find a bike without one. Apparently according to more mags the best disc lock on the market is the motrax vishas £30 on ebay and the abus grannit. Have to check to see if they will fit you disc though. hope this helps

I didnt think disc locks make any diffrence, when a thief comes to take you're bike they just lift it.

In the grand scheme of things a disc lock is better than no lock.
As said, better to secure the bike/ped to something.

Also bear in mind if someone tries to ride off with the disc lock fitted it may damage the brake and when the bike/ped falls over there may be other damage (mirrors, levers, plastics, etc.). Maybe something extra needed, like a cheap bike alarm from eBay with a motion sensor?

FWIW I've recently been putting 2 disc locks on the bike when parked up outside anyone's house as don't want to take the big chain with me. One disc lock before the fork and one after. Stops it being wheeled far.

Thumbs Up

Ive told em the get an anchor bolt outside. They own a resturant out there and its just simple Greek brick, no poles nothing.
I will mention the alarm. its her brothers fault, she heads out there once a year then he takes over.

I use a disc lock but i also use a chain lock to lock it to an anchor in my bike garage. When i'm out an about i just use the disc hoping it will be a deterrent more than anything and relying more on the alarm / immobiliser and CCTV that i always park near.

Smart water is less of a deterent than a disc lock. The person who nicks it....

A) if pissed wouldn't notice the smartwater stickers, but would notice a disclock when he can't push the fecker away.

B) if not pissed, probably just wants it to get to the next town instead of using the public transport. Therefore wouldn't care about smartwater either.

Just buy a big Feck off chain and padlock and chain it to anything that can't be moved or lifted too. Wink

particularly for scooters, but for any other bike, disc locks are fairly useless. I can pick up my brothers scooter with him sitting on it, and I wouldnt have any trouble lifting it into a van myself. On the other hand a lot of scooters and small bikes are stolen by oppurtunist chavs, who wont be able to ride away on a bike with a disc lock. For the same price get a basic chain and padlock, as this will stop all but the most determined theives.

I use mine when I pop into town, but only on stops shorter than an hour or so (if that makes any difference at all). I live in a relatively crime-quiet area but even so, wouldn't want to leave my bike out too long with just one on.

Probably no use but we used to get a local builder to hoist the bikes onto the balcony when we were away. When we were there we just tied one of the dogs to one of the bikes for the night and let the others wander around, tended to put most 'tourists' off. if you want a disc lock then what about a zena(xena, don't have a clue on the spelling, but Zena had a better choice in leather:wink: )? They have a built in alarm but to be honest I have no idea how good they are.

EDIT:
Used to have a house on Thassos, the reply probably makes a bit more sense, having a balcony in Stoke would be a bit 'odd' Rolling Eyes An anchor in greece would be real cheap.................................but it would take 3 years to fit and would fall out the first time you used it.

Disk locks are ok as a deterant but there is another twist to the safety of a disk lock.... YOU!

Always:

Arrow Remember to remove it before riding away!

Arrow Remember to lock it in the shut position just after removing it. What do you automatically do otherwise if it's in the open position and you want to use it.... you just clamp it onto the bike and walk away. It's only when you return, or just after it goes 'click', that your heart misses a beat as you realise you've left the key at home 100's of miles away....

So to answer the question of how safe is a disklock.... if you've got a poor memory they are not very safe at all Wink

For an everyday thug that wants to steal it , they work.
But in the end no matter what locks , chains , blocks of concrete.

If someone want to steal it , they will.
Best thing to do is put inside a garage, on your property.
So its out of sight , other than that.....

Ive got my baby , inside my double garage with a siren disc lock,
and i also have a bull-mastiff dog , that like to make noise at anything thats not normal.

In the end, if someone wants something , they can get tools to break , cut , saw anything.

I have a bulky Disklock on the front wheel and a bulky chain tied to the back and around the pole.
It in a back courtyard with some fencing around it. So people from the street cant see it unless they walk around the fence.
We have just been given a shed but I feel it would be more safe tied to a pole then just being 'locked' in the shed. Someone could carry it away.
The only worry really for me, is the kids. Found twigs in the ignition and fuel cap yesterday. They just dont give a flying fook.

I've got one of them Xena ones, its okay , the alarm is not mental loud.

But would atract attention.

It also saved me from setting off with the thing in.

----
Same here as most, depending on where I am I use different locks.

I am lucky to have underseat storage and have a 5 foot chain.

At work my bike is garaged in a swipe controlled building, (2 swipe gates to get to it) with CCTV etc. So no issues there.

Considering that steering locks aren't difficult to break, having a disc lock at least means the bike cant be wheeled away. They might seem pretty useless, but there is no way I would leave my bike in town without putting it on.
