Have you ever looked back on something you've done on your bike and thought 'Holy hell, I was lucky to come out of that alive!'?

Last Friday I was late for a job in Taunton, so I was nailing it down the motorway. I kept coming across cars in the fast lane doing 90-100mph and getting really annoyed. They moved across in the end and I would give them a wave as I went past. But one knob in his Audi sat in this fast lane unneccesarily for about 3 minutes; he could have just as easily been in the middle lane, if only to let me past. I was behaving like a knob really, too close to his bumper and positioned to the right of him, letting him know I wanted to get through.

Here comes the stupid bit.

He edged a bit closer to the middle lane and by then I'd already decided I wasn't going to undertake, just in case he wasn't looking and moved over. So I positioned myself on the far right hand side between him and the barrier, and squeezed on through. I got through and nailed it again, the endorphine rush from making it through was nice, but the realisation that I was probably at best 10 inches movement away from certain death was a bit scarier.

I pledged to myself to never go on the bike again when I'm that late and in that much of a rush, because if I do, it will kill me.

Yeah I know what you mean, one moment of madness was with Dom and Reevo last year on the way up the M3, we was in the outside lane but both the middle and outside lane were both full of traffic with what appeared to be no-one using the inside lane, so I swooped across the 2 lanes only to nearly go up the arse of a Renualt 5 crawling on the inside lane.

Now I know why everyone was in the overtaking lanes.

Shouldn't have survived that really.

Impatience and motorcycles, a bad combination. The only time I;ve been near death was when I fell off and narrowly missed going under a lorry, apart from that, I try to keep my NDEs to a minimum.

Yes, last night.

My mate thought it would be a good idea to stop at a roundabout junction with no traffic anywhere and lean his bike over to the side to move the oil around so his oil light would go off...

Cue rear wheel lockage and about a 3mm gap when i slid up next to him

Him: "Sorry mate, oil light"

Me: "Oh right... retard"

The day before yesterday, I was filtering at speed when a truck came the other way at speed. I thought I had more space when I did so had to stop and lean over to the left to avoid being hit by it as I couldn't get further into the left. I felt the wind on my shoulder through my leathers and was praying for nothing sticking out of the RHS of the truck all the way as it passed with less than an inch to spare.

On a rideout with Kornel years ago (when I was still on the NSR) we were blatting through some unknown countryside around a reservoir. I was the only 125 so I was giving it a bit to keep up and all was going well until we came down a hill then over a steep hump-back bridge. I think we all were going at a fair rate...

Seems that there was a queue of traffic the other side

Doubt I've ever braked as hard as that since. Very lucky to stop in time to be honest.

I've only thought i was going to die once and that was because i trusted someone else's road knowledge when i shouldn't have.

I was following someone down a nice twisty B road when a nice, although blind, left hander all of a sudden approx half way roound turned into a T junction!

I saw no signs to indicate a junction coming up and when i went back to have a look it was all grown over by a very large hedge

Anway we just had to treat the junction as part of the corner, wlthough slowing down as much as possible whilst leant over we would never have stopped for it in time and just hoped that nothing was going to hit us, fortunately nothing did.

After chain smoking a few tabs, we were off again and the moral of that story is never just follow the person in front, read the road for yourself (although even that wouldn't have helped in this case).

We did report the overgrown hedge to the highways commission and it was sorted within a day, so thumbs up to them

only really when riding pillion on my mates bike a few years ago.

he nailed it past a lorry only to find another one coming towards us.

i thought to myself this is it time to die and braced myself for my death.

he managed to slam the anchors on and somehow get back in behind the lorry.

I had an "Oh Crap - This is bad" moment on the track on sunday...

As i said in another thread i had my front wheel taken out by someone unable to complete a slightly dodgy overtake round the 1st bend and sent me into a rather scary high side.

Bike did multiple flips before landing very close to me, and i had a lot of nasty hits to my head / back and neck / shoulder...

I just remember thinking when my head hit the deck for the second time... ( The first one knocked me out momentarily ), "This is bad, that hurt a lot and theres nothing i can do, that was a BIG landing..." next thing i know im laying flat on the deck unable to move.

Somehow i managed to come out of it just winded, and my inability to move was purely down to me having the stuffing completely knocked out of me and nothing more.

So im quite glad to be sitting here typing this, with bruises on my shoulder and a bit of neck pain ... Didnt think i'd ever hear myself say that

I do it pretty much every time im on a bike, ridiculous speeds in 30 areas, ect. You just gota know when to stop, and obviously dont do these sorts of things at busy hours.

not really doing anything stupid where it shouldn't be done, although on a way to a mates house taking country roads i went round a corner much much faster than i should have and felt the rear start to loose grip

My NDE was in 04 in southern Spain some small insignificant road. We had just stopped for a smoke, the weather was roasting and you guessed it I left off the leathers and gloves. Well it was only a short 20 mins ride to the next town and lunch I was the last of 3 riders to set off so I nailed it to get in front. Checked my mirrors to see how far back they were, just as I entered a sweeping left bend.....that without warning turned into a rather tight left hander.
"This is gonna hurt" I thought as the bike nose dived into a 3ft ditch at around 80 I landed about 50ft farther up the ditch before bouncing back onto the road with the bike doing it`s best to keep up with me.
The bike suffered extensive bodywork damage and a cracked engine cover, which wasn`t too bad considering. Me!! well the ditch had boulders the size of a small chairs in and had I hit one of those head first I wouldn`t be writing this post. Lets just say I am of a manly build so after a 50 mile ambulance trip and 8 hrs in A&E of some none English speaking middle of nowhere hospital (where they nicknamed me superman) after they weren`t impressed on my attemps to fly I walked away with just bumps and bruises and a damaged ego.

Yeah, a few times.

With overtakes, you really have to trust your machine to not get you killed.

There was this one time, where I went to overtake a car, and another came over the horizon. I was half way past, so I swallowed my fears and doubts and felt my testicles growing as I got my head down and wound the throttle back, soaring past the car and swerving back onto the right side of the road. The adrenalin rush you get from doing that is immense. I do think it is stupid and I do not advocate doing it.

I have done that twice, on the same route, MattHirst saw it happen once.

Another time was when I had pillion, and was on a rideout with my mate on his CG125. Well he was infront and there were two cars infront of him, going at a fair pace, say 50mph or so. He went for the overtake, and I decided I would too, told my pillion to hold on. Throttle on, I was right behind him and gaining, he tucked back in and so did I, just as two other cars came flying past us.

And my favouritest time, was when I went for the overtake on what I thought was a good piece of road to do so. As I wound it on, I saw a big massive red car come round the corner, I was dead level with the car I was overtaking and there was no way I could get round in time. You know what I did?

I have too many to mention here….

One I remember was on my DTR, my missus used to grab a lift with me because the traffic was horrendous to work.
On the way back we were about five minutes from her house filtering, I tucked in behind a car and waited, not letting my feet go down, ready to get out again.
I saw an opportunity and went, but as I did, some guy on a ZX6R thought the same thing and we were heading towards each other in between traffic, we both tucked in to attempt the pass, as we did his mirror/arm whatever hit my rucksack which my missus was wearing!
