Hi all. I signed up with Tiscali Broadband about a month ago and it's a good service. I signed up for the 8MB package. I only get around 3.3MB. I understand that the quality of the line and the distance from my house to the local exchange can affect the speed, but, how would the company go about getting everyone in my area up to the 8MB? When I signed up, they said I could get up to 3.2MB, does that mean now that no matter what I try, they will set it at that? So if the exchange was upgraded, would I still be on 3.2MB, or would it upgrade automatically?

Thanks in advance.

A lot of providers 'offer' a high performance service, but when you check the fine print it mentions that it's only an 'up-to' service (i.e. upto 8mb) with a lot depending on traffic, contention, time of day etc.

Like I used to be on NTL's 'upto' 10mb service, but was only seeing 4-6mb and recently as low as 1mb due to contention. Hence I downgraded to 4Mb and it's been fine (now the upload is increased to 400k I don't mind it). Plus saves me a tenner a month Thumbs Up

It does sound like 3.2mb would be your highest speed for now, but this could improve over time ,when the provider makes upgrades to their infrastructure.

Thumbs Up

As above, but...

Where are you downloading from? It sounds to me that the download speed you quote is due to the allocated upload speed and/or distance from the servers you have used. Try downloading from a faster server. Don't bother with internet-based broadband speed tests, as most use servers based in the US.

Unfortunately for the domestic broadband market, we have now reached the point where servers cannot upload fast enough for our hungry downstream bandwidths, even during 'quiet' periods.
