I want to get a dog that's diffrent, i've thought of Pitbulls, Dobermans, another Alsation but then i thought about a Siberian Husky, is this the closest thing you can own to a wild wolf? Lovely looking dogs but can't seem to find a price on pups & how they behave. I'd love one with diffrent colour eyes & white/grey coat. Mr. Green

Cheers.

I used to own a salmoid, whom was a beautiful dog. A japanese husky I believe. She had a beautiful temprament however I don;t think their all like that.

From what I've heard huskies can have a wild streak in them but a bit of TLC will see them make an excellent dog....however be prepared to walk them a lot!

Apologies, the spelling is samoyed not salmoid! Doh!

We had Mandy when I was a wee bairn living in the North East of Scotland. They are absolutely geourgous dogs but not in the wolk huskie way you mean. Their also very exspensive (as are wolf huskies).

TBH you'll probably have to hunt around the net and be prepared to travel a fair distance to get the breed you want but they are worth it if you put the time and effort in!

I remember when I was little and my mam had walked me to school with mandy and obviously all the kids would crowd in to see the dog, some even crying if the couldn;t get in about to pet her! Great dogs!

Probably of no use to you but I know for a fact there is wolf husky breeders in newtonards in Northern Ireland. When I used to visit with my ex our neighbours in the 'ards had three of the wolfs and they were beautiul, with big bright wild blue eyes.

They also howl to the moon, which is cool in a creepy kinda way!

Yep, we have one. Had her from a pup and she's about 20 months old now.

They make excellent pets, but you have to be aware of one or two things up front:

Arrow They need a lot of exercise. I'm sure I read somewhere that the recommendation is 5 miles per day. Ours gets about 20 minutes in the morning and 60-90 minutes in the evening, probably more at weekends. This works well enough for her - she lets us know when's got some energy!

Arrow They are the worst guard dog on the planet! Nah, seriously, if someone broke into our house she wouldn't make a peep. In fact, if they rubbed her belly she'd probably lick them to death. This is a common trait. She's extremely unaggressive - even if another dog barks at her she'll stand there wagging her tail!

Arrow It is not recommended to let them off their lead in public. Not because they're dangerous, but because they're likely to run off somewhere. We've been very careful with ours and there are now a couple of fields where we let her run free. Don't take it for granted though, we've spoken to many other Husky owners who can't do that.

Arrow They have quite thick fur (strangely enough, what with being designed for Siberia!), but it's not actually as bad as you'd think in terms of getting everywhere. They generally malt a couple of times a year but they're no worse than a fluffy cat in that respect. It tends to come out in big tufts.

Arrow Prepare to have your garden destroyed. Huskies dig... and dig... and dig. Our garden always has at least half a dozen holes in it, some deep enough to lose your ankle into. Again, it's a common trait. Some are known to dig under fences, so you may have to be careful. I've read that they can jump over fences smaller than 6ft but I've yet to see any evidence of this!

Arrow They don't bark! Or at least it's extremely rare, which is a massive plus in my eyes. Ours barks maybe once a fortnight, and even then it'll be one or two yaps, not a full blown barking frenzy. However...

Arrow ...they will howl! They actully talk to you in a wolf-type howl when they communicate. It never ceases to make people laugh, because it's kind of unusual.

Arrow They are renowned for being intelligent, so some thought needs to go into keeping them entertained or else you may end up with a destroyed house. The intelligence is clear though - I've never house trained a pet before and within one day she was asking to go outside when she needed the toilet.

Arrow People often mistake Malumutes as Huskies. Malumutes are much bigger and broader, Huskies are actually reasonably small. When often get "I thought they were bigger" comments about her.

Can't think of much else off hand. Feel free to ask questions. If you're prepared to put a bit of extra work into looking after one they can make excellent pets and be very rewarding, but don't take one on if you can't commit to it 100%.

Have a look at the Siberian Husky Club site for some useful info:
https://www.siberianhuskyclub.com/

And finally, the obitqutous picture of our monster! Very Happy

I wish my dobie didn't bark, if I'm on the loo and he barks in the kitchen I feel the vibation through the floor, I swear he knows when i'm there.

My girlfriend used to have a samoyed he was a great dog but used to come home funny colours because of the kids smoothing it with sweets stuck on there hands.

Here's a good link for some overall info:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siberian_Husky

Quote:
Popular as family pets and as show dogs due to their striking appearance and gentle temperament, Siberians have certain drawbacks. Huskies can be extremely affectionate, curious, and welcoming to people, which means they rarely hurt humans, making them poor guard dogs. Properly socialized Siberians are often quite gentle with children, although no dog, including Siberians, should be left unsupervised with small children. Normally quite tractable, affectionate, and docile with people, they nonetheless have a strong hunting drive and are known to kill (and even eat) cats, rabbits, chickens, squirrels, and other small animals. They have even been known to savage sheep on occasion, which is one of the many reasons why they are believed to be closely related to the wolf. If the Husky is raised with a small animal such as a cat, it is less likely to hurt that animal. However, their prey drive can eventually develop.

Siberian Huskies should be kept in secure fenced enclosures at least six feet in height as they will not always come to call and will often disappear on long hunting trips. Thus, they cannot be allowed to run loose. They should be kept leashed. Siberians are also accomplished escape artists, so enclosures should be checked frequently for any potential escape routes. The dogs are good diggers, able to tunnel under fences with shallow foundations. Huskies are trainable to a certain degree, but require patience. They are independent in nature and not given to blind obedience to every command.

I'm deff going to get one of these dogs now, what other types of wolf dog can you get, i'd rather one that isn't really soft or bad security if someone broke in. But i'm very tempted, my mum wants one too to acompany my Alsation.

You don't see too many dobeys around for a reason, they don't make great pets. Too prone to turning nasty, sadly.

I obviously don't know you or how you treat animals, so don't take offense at this, but bear in mind a husky is a working breed. As silver said it will take commitment to look after it. They're not a laid back dog who you can just ignore and have around to fuss occassionally. They will demand interaction and exercise, give it and they are an awful lot of fun to have around Thumbs Up

/offtopic rambling, not aimed at anyone in this thread

I grew up in a kennels, we trained the guard dogs for the old Sterling armament company in Dagenham as well as doing the usual longstay pet care. Over the course of my youth I got to see alot of dogs because of this, and I find it flat out amazing just how little some owners know about their pet. This amazement extends to today, watching the idiots with their one bedroom first floor flats shopping around for a collie or a spaniel "Because they are little dogs", or the twats who buy "hard" dogs and then have no fucking idea of how to train or handle them. End result, lots of unhappy, cramped or possibly destroyed animals after Bonzo has finally lost it and gone for someone due to bad training or simply boredom and agoraphobia.

By the way, you're a bastard craigie b Sad

I've wanted a samoyed for a while, those pictures really aren't helping Razz

Wouldn't mind one of those bikes.

I remember this black mongrel called Ben who used to escape from hes garden & walk around the streets, he wasn't trained yet i've never seen a more well behaved dog. He would walk by you're side & sit at roads & look at you until you tell him it's ok, never barked at any other dogs & loved kids, everyone in the area new him. This is the sort of dog i'd like. He looked like the one on the Delux adverts. Smile
