yep and yep, one of the things they just cant teach you, ok they can try, Road awareness is just a different kettle of fish (never understood where that saying came from Confused ) from driving a car.

Ride like everyone is trying to kill you !

Since I've been riding, it's certainly made me a better car driver. I'm more aware of what's going on around me and looking out for hazards at junctions etc, driving the car as though I was on a bike really (as well as thinking about filtering - oops, no I can't do that!! Embarassed )

I got a Reliant Robin years ago to keep out the cold (And look a complete twat..). I remember having a crisis once: I was filtering, and had been for some time, but the bollard and oncoming traffic i faced suddenly made me realise that this was the wrong vehicle for such antics. I was only 18 though.. Hmm Wink

I agree, Since learning to ride a bike about ten years ago it's made me a better car/van driver. Observations everywhere and drive as if everyones pulling out on you, but when they do, let them know about it!

The only way people are going to be more bike aware is if they ride one themselves and recognise the vulnerability as well as the level of awareness you need if you are going to ride a bike and survive. As a biker you are more attuned to the dangers of the road and that does translate into your driving when you get into a car.

Another thing which is good is if you ant got a car licence yet, but been riding motorbikes for a couple of years, then do a car licence test. Its really helping me at the moment.

Example: When I see a car trying to pull out of a junction with parked cars blocking there view, so I can only see the bonnet, I would normally just ride along without doing anything much apart from keeping an eye on the bonnet incase it pulled out.

Now im driving, I know what its like to not being able to see a thing, so I try to slow down a bit and get an escape route planned, ect. Of course parked cars is no excuse for pulling out on someone, if you cant see then get out... lol.
