I work as a courier and got a cash job from the office to goto Tilbury docks and pick up a Pallet going to East Ham and get paid at the other end by the collecting customer, £50 for a quick and easy job.

so I drive round to the bonded warehouse. give them the reference number, waited about 20 minutes and got loaded with a pallet of champagne.

I drive round to the exit of the docks and get flagged over into a different exit lane, nothing unusual about that as the other lanes where busy I thought.

I show the gate pass to the guy at the gate and he asks me to get out the van and show some ID, hmmm this doesnt seem right.
Show him my cash card then 4 old bill seem to come from nowhere and next thing I know I'm under arrest for the theft of £5,000 worth of champagne !!!!

I stood there and couldnt stop laughing, trying to explain to them that Im just a courier and im only picking up what Ive been told to.
"sorry sir you are in the possession of the stolen goods which are now confiscated along with your van"

WTF !! Now I'm starting to worry a little bit, "where would you like your hand cuffs front or back"? is the next question, front please for the obvious comfort benefits of being able to scratch your nose should the need arise.

Next I'm off in to the police car with spectators starting to gather and me still laughing my arse off at the whole stupid situation.
"after we have interviewed you we will then get a search warrant to search your home for further stolen goods"

Ok this is starting to get silly now, last thing I need is the old bill tearing my flat apart looking for something thats not there !

Eventually the Chief inspector finishes searches my van and comes to the extremley obvious conclusion that I am what I say i am just a courier or as he called me a pattsie, Lee harvey oswald eat your heart out ! im then de-arrested and have to give a interview

The police did want me to drive the goods to the drop as they where going to follow me in a unmarked car but fortunalty the people who hired us to pick the stuff up must have had a inside guy at the warehouse as someone posing as a police officer phoned the warehouse after I picked up and claimed the goods where being stolen.

I can only assume they did this after they noticed the police following me when I left the warehouse.

All in all a entertaining afternoon with one huge benefit for me I was supposed to do a job straight after this one at 16:30 Ilford to Putney but alas being locked up I wasnt able to
A cautionary tale dont do cash jobs from Bonded warehouses !! Mr. Green

Interesting legal point. You were never in possesion of the champagne. You were in possesion of boxes marked as champagne.

The Police often seem to forget that a courier is in possesion of an unopened package, they are not in possesion of the contents as we NEVER verify the contents.

The police are a little funny with people in Tilbury, you wont stop for too long in the high street otherwise they'd nick your shoes, so eveyones a suspect really Wink

I used to live in EAST Tilbury which is actually 3 odd miles from the shit hole of Tilbury and the docks, we always emphasised that we didnt live in there Embarassed

Idea Did you know that Indiana Jones and the Holy Grail boat scene in Venice was filmed at Tilbury docks Wink Thumbs Up

I'm pretty sure that was turkey. Laughing
Glad you could see the funny side most people would've shouted off and got a night in the cells, typical keystone cops. Very Happy

Sometimes it's a bit obvious though.

Picking up from VERY expensive jewellers in Sloane Street. Two security guards carry the package out to me and ask what my insurance liability is like! Shocked
